RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
I'm a draughtsman.
I draw arcade machines in Solidworks. I can also use TurboCAD, AutoCAD, and probably any program you can throw at me (I are the computer wiz).
I got this job despite being female and never having done anything even vaguely similar because no-one else turned up. Now I've been here two years and will be starting the last year of my HNC on the 14th.
One day I want to draw artificial life forms and nanobots and useful parts such as an artificial brain and a tail. (I'd love a tail, a good strong dextrous one.)

Ooh, ohh, and I want to figure out how to remove my father's *** spine and replace (or just reinforce) it with titanium or aluminium without paralysing him, so he doesn't need to be in pain any more.

Wow that's awesome to get that job when you didn't have any experience. I have been having a really hard time finding a job post graduation. I don't seem to have any skills other than test taking and essay writing! I'm looking into janitorial work at the moment....

Thanks! The company are actually pants (good people, generally, but tight/mean) and pay most of us here (even the more qualified ones) minimum wage but it's hard to get work in this area.
I think I also got the job because no-one else showed up, my manager (who interviewed me) didn't know anything about computers (I didn't know this, and assumed I'd be interviewed by someone who did, or who at least knew the diffirince between a hard-drive and a banana) and was baffled by my careening off about how useful my computer skills and life experience would be. I also said "I'll work a few days free, before you make any decisions to see if I really can do it, and if you think my work is good enough..." (I recommend this with smaller companies. I'm serious, they love it.)
So I worked that Friday, picked up TurboCAD instantly, and away I went. Took me a while to got used to third angle projection though.
What did you study? What do you want to do?

Well done.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
I'm currently working in Russia as a Production Chemist in some of the West Sberian Oilfields. Interesting i n terms of location and experience, but I do struggle with the lack of structure and routine sometimes. They pay me enough, so I'll deal with anything
Previously I worked offshore on oilrigs around Australia and SE Asia etc, and loved it, never thought I would get out there but here I am doing it.

I wanted a graphics job in a company. It was a metal coating place. So they would get in client's logos and just have to resize, clean up and translate the file to their system. I really wanted the job but they used Corel Draw and I only knew Illustrator and Photoshop. The guy said that some artist people come in and just don't like it because there is no designing just editing. Before he said that he had some engineer come in who knew CAD but couldn't do Corel so fast. So he hired some kid who knew Corel. A year later he was looking for someone again.
Yeah, I would work for free for a while but I just can't find anywhere. I give up really.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
I am a Demand Planner for a major food company in Australia. This role is perfect for a HFA such as myself and I thrive on it.
When I finished Uni is 1992 it was hard to get a job because the Oz economy was stuffed at the time, but I got one job that lead to another, that lead to another that lead to the one I have. Perserverance and a believe in yourself is the key.
I educate and talk to NT's about Aspies and I seem to have become a minor role model in my community for parents with young Aspies that everything is just fine and not to panic becuase your child is AS.
Work is always available, you have just got to find the key.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
Dear Hubby says my late Dad and I were born with gold four leaf clovers in our rears. I spent 20 years as an auditor for the state. We audited state and local governments for compliance with financial, grant and legal guidelines. I didn't realize how much human interaction it required. I quit at one point and went back to school to get a second Bachelors in Management (grades not good enough for Graduate School) at a final economic cost of about $50,000 considering lost wages and living expenses for that year. I thought having a Management degree would help me understand what was wrong with me. Nope.
I went back to the state and about 10 years lataer transferred to another agency. By that time my ADHD/Inatttentive and HFA limitations could not be overcome. I retired rather than quit or be fired to ensure that my family would have health insurance.
I've been retired since 1999 (one week shy of my 50th birthday). Have very little desire to go back to work. I'd prefer to scrimp and save. And despite having 2 business degrees and passing the CPA exam, I'm lousy at finance.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
i was an area systems operator in the army but since i left i seem to be unemployable
The national un-employment rate (very high now) in the US is 10%, and yet the unemplyoment rate for (returning) service-men (and women) is between 15 and 20% (heard that this AM).

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
Wonder if that has to do with the higher rate of disability among returning vets?
Of the Aspies I know IRL:
Two are unemployed with a high school degree.
One is unemployed with a bachelor's degree.
One is a part-time janitor with a high school degree.
One is an engineer with a master's degree.
One is a biologist with a doctorate.
And me, of course, a student halfway through my bachelor's.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
No, the statistics were for peers/ by age skill - all things being equal.
However, 1 in 4 of the homeless people in the US are veterans (from all past wars/conflicts) A lot of that is due to disbaling mental health issues, ptsd, etc.,
I wish I knew a dxd aspie in real life - my neighbor thinks her husband is on the spectrum. My aspie son is always thinking about what on earth he could someday "make a living" at or what on earth he can "get paid' to do...
No guarantees and he knows that I guess.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?
Neither do I. I love three or four different fields (depending on whether you're counting medicine, which I know I would never get a job doing), and my biomedical engineering major is mostly something I took because I'm fascinated with research science, engineering, and assistive technology and had to try to find an intersection of those fields.
