What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I have a 2;1 university degree in Maths but I can't get a job.
I just get refused even for minimum wage jobs.
Is this normal for Aspies?

To answer your first question, none. I was dismissed from the Met Office last Monday after 7 1/2 years.

As the player's breath warms the fipple the tone clears.
It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

Web Developer. And I did not get such a job right away after college.

-----------------

Yes, such an experience as yours Xavier is normal, I am afraid. They would say you were overqualified. It's an excuse of course we know that.

Your odds of getting in at your appropriate occupational level depend on the competitiveness of your occupation, your Asperger and interviewing/social skills, and perhaps your appearance/weight.

I found out social research was the wrong occupation to have with a college degree. It did not even get to the interview stage.

I did get interviews after a Master's degree. I did get one Census Bureau job after heavy mock interviewing at the college I went to. That suggests Asperger was the problem as opposed to the weight, say. But I did flunk 35 other interviews.

When the government job did not work out (see Aeolienne, I am just like you, but I went on to a successful job in a different career later) and I still had trouble interviewing the State of Maryland finally said forget the Master's we'll train you in computers at our expense.

They did. I am a Web developer now.

I could be laid off for lack of steady assignments.  The contracting company that hired me was a smaller business when I came on board. It got and did well on many projects. It got to bid on projects because it was small: the Government favors little companies. We got bigger. Now we can't go fishing anymore. The only thing we can do is be a big brother (a partnership working on a government contract) to a small business, but all that does is win us 49% of the contract (not the 100% we used to do).

I'm surprised you didn't mention work experience (or lack thereof). There are very few jobs that you can expect to get on the strength of a degree result alone.

RE: What jobs do other Aspies do?

I've just been working a part time job for the last three years as I'm helping to raise my two special needs grandchildren. I work one day a week cleaning a beauty salon (it pays $15 an hour though). I like it because I have a routine I can follow and because I don't have someone looking over my shoulder, or talking to me while I'm working, distracting me and making me forget to do something.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I work as Geotechnical Engineer, on a laptop all day long writing reports for site classification for building and pavement designs.  I was diagnosed with AS privately so it isn't on my medical records and no-one knows apart from my close family members and girlfriend (and you lot now!) that I have AS.  I have never told any of my employers and colleagues.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I'm about to become a camp counselor.

I've babysat, and tutored young children previously.

Now, I own my own business.

Yeah. But how do people get any job experience in the first place?
Everyone must have had no experience whatsoever originally.

Yes. I get told I either don't have the experience required for some jobs or am overqualified.
I used to get interviews when I first finished my degree but don't any more.

I have been on 3 or 4 courses where they teach you interview skills, filling in application forms etc, and they all seem genuinely surprised that I can't get a job with my qualifications.

Now I am fast just losing interest in the whole thing and would rather be self employed.

Being self employed can work well for an Aspie. I've worked on my own for most of the last 11 years. BUT... you have to be realistic with yourself and know that you'll have to beat your head against your own weaknesses and challenge yourself in ways that won't always feel comfortable.

The biggest problem when you're self employed is that you have to go out and sell yourself and get jobs. I'm horrible at this - it's like going on job interviews over and over and over. I've done best when I've developed relationships with other small companies that have a repeated need for my someone with my skill set, but not quite enough work to hire someone full time. It's an easier sell to get them to try working with me on a contract basis for a single job. If I do that job well, more will follow. This can also be a good way to gain work experience and can often turn into full time employment with the company.

I think its normal for most people at the moment. Few if any businesses seem to be hiring, most appear to be dismissing workers.

It is normal most of the time. I was in McDonalds once the manager was glad to see me ask to apply, but I never heard back.... overqualified I guess
