I plan to be a full fledged DVM in the future.

I'm currently unemployed. Again.

Ditto, although I did manage a four-month internship with an electronics dot-com in Cambridge since my last post.

As the player's breath warms the fipple the tone clears.
It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.

I'm a civil servant in the UK Deaprtment for Transport. Suits me pretty well, been here for 5 years.
I also teach piano and play for musical theatre companies and choirs, gets me a handy 2nd income.

I could do that but it is really really difficult to get a permanent job in Canada.  There some contracts but even difficult to get.  The workload is not terrible either.  You have to process so many samples per year and submit a certain number of reports.  I had a placement there before but they refused to hire me.  (back when I did not know that I could demand accommodations).

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

Admin in the NHS for an agency, covering 3 jobs and they're about to add a 4th. Not really qualified but I'm pretty technically adaptable and IT literate.

Degree in engineering and I used to contract as technical project manager in Mass transit and security systems. But when you're a girl, you have a limited shelf life in the UK. Being an undiagnosed aspie, I now see didn't help as I got older.

Being good at something so often makes people want to promote you in line with the Peter Principle. That's where you get promoted out of the level of your competence to the level of your incompetence where you stop and lose your job or are sidelined. I'd love a job where I worked alongside one person and is say, service engineering (but I was always told I was too good to be allowed to get the experience there).
I kept getting pushed into too much customer contact.

Recently, stress of finances and overwork and expectations had got me read the riot act by the job agency not once but twice. I am known as a hard worker and competent and they emphasise this always but, it seems, being lazy or incompetent whilst being a social adept as opposed to blunt is valued more highly. Upset one more person and I'll be without recourse in this market and go bankrupt.

Funniest and most telling comment from a boss in my past was 'I hate to cross you when you're right'.

I read a recent blog which gave me so great advice (from an aspie). Limit social interaction at work. Simples Smile http://blog.penelopetrunk.com/2009/11/24...-annoying/

Biggest failing I have: falling for the bait and switch. I am constantly subsidising employers.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I used to work in quality control lab chemical and microbiological testing.  The lab work and record keeping I was good at.  I often found that clear written instructions were lacking.  Problems more with boss lying to me, switching samples etc.  The other part of the job was checking in process product.  The workers would distract me or hide defects or other problems with me "not fitting in" or not being "friendly".  I found that doing that job while they were at lunch or break was much easier.

the dream lab job would have been strictly bench work and a steady supply of samples. I ended up having to do the inprocess inspections because I did that at another workplace.  I had applied for a bench job only but it was changed when I got hired.

The promoting to incompetence seems to be a common complaint among aspies.  Usually for management or group leadership positions.  Also I usually end up iwith a huge workload than everyone else.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I remember being about 7, and my mom explaining to me what the word "hermit" meant. My immediate thought: "Hey, that's a career option? I know what I'm gonna be when I grow up!"

Unfortunatly, turns out it isn't so simple. I now have my first post-college job as an assistant at a small publication; mostly, I get to sit in my office and read stuff on Project Gutenburg. Hardly pays anything, but getting to spend my days like this is literally invaluable to me. After hours, I do GRE and GMAT verbal tutoring, the one paid application I've found for my superb facility at acing multiple choice tests.

My dream job: technical writer (if I can't make it as an actual writer).

Yeah. But how do people get any job experience in the first place?
Everyone must have had no experience whatsoever originally.

Yes. I get told I either don't have the experience required for some jobs or am overqualified.
I used to get interviews when I first finished my degree but don't any more.

I have been on 3 or 4 courses where they teach you interview skills, filling in application forms etc, and they all seem genuinely surprised that I can't get a job with my qualifications.

Now I am fast just losing interest in the whole thing and would rather be self employed.

You are young, which makes you marketable for unskilled jobs. I used to get them when I was younger. If you want work experience you might be able to get a paid job as a cleaner or(if you,re much better on social or communication skills than me - almost everyone is)you might get work as a counter assistant in a supermarket/retail/fast food place.Apart from searching the internet for voluntary work in what you're qualified in or phoning round companies offering to work for free, I don,t know how you get work experience in your chosen field.I had to accept I wasn't smart enough at what I trained in (or anything else) to work in anything but cleaning jobs. Hopefully you are smarter than me Good luck - Ephemerol9

It didnt help me succeed, but at least I wasnt broke when I had to give up on self employment Good luck - Ephemerol9

Being self employed can work well for an Aspie. I've worked on my own for most of the last 11 years. BUT... you have to be realistic with yourself and know that you'll have to beat your head against your own weaknesses and challenge yourself in ways that won't always feel comfortable.

The biggest problem when you're self employed is that you have to go out and sell yourself and get jobs. I'm horrible at this - it's like going on job interviews over and over and over. I've done best when I've developed relationships with other small companies that have a repeated need for my someone with my skill set, but not quite enough work to hire someone full time. It's an easier sell to get them to try working with me on a contract basis for a single job. If I do that job well, more will follow. This can also be a good way to gain work experience and can often turn into full time employment with the company.

Isnt' Bill Gates and wasn't Steve Jobs both aspies?

I think a lot of us sell ourselves short. We need more ASD people as employers to counter the prejudice we face.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I've worked as a marine scientist, screen printer, policy analyst, community relations! manager, database developer. All adding to good career progress but not without the hurdles of thinking differently and eventually getting challenged for that.
