RE: Grumpy is opening the bar...celebration time!
I'm looking out for bar work myself, well, looking out for any work, period (well almost any, prostitute is off the list, as are toilet cleaner, stripper, and anything involving either the posession of two fully functional knee joints, and/or handlng anything with a texture similar to that of a wooden spoon...ick..evil texture...just...wrong..)
Although I would love to go into one of the scientific fields, bar work would be good for the cash..but I am doing my best to learn through practise, how to set up old-style capstan lathes, as I have to use one regularly here at home, apparently, since almost all lathes in use these days are computer controlled CNC types, one can get paid quite a lot, likewise for welding, that appeals too. Training as a welder is very expensive though, and at the moment I just don't have enough money.
Science-y and bar work I don't think are mutually exclusive, I am very much that type myself. Heh, and then some. Anything physical and technical in nature appeals, unless it involves a lot of math (thanks, dyscalculia, bugger off and a merry damn well xmas along with it), spent quite a while setting up that damn old fossil of a lathe last night, in fact all the time, short of one single finished workpiece/part that got made, out of a total of about 70 and around 6am I was busy recrystallizing the fruits of my labours in the lab, my latest project, dissolving in CH2Cl3, washing repeatedly with water, distilling off the dichlor, washing with MeOH etc...rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat...literally.
Thats what comes with being autie and having wierd sleeping patterns
Does give a bit of a boost to the cocktail-mixing skills though, you would be surprised what can be done with diethyl or diisopropyl ether (uninhibited of course) as far as mixing a drink goes...and one with a heck of a kick to it at that, worked for the irish a decade or two ago, and the russians have a history of drinking the stuff, its actually quite pleasant, although a lot more intoxicating than alcohol.
I think a good shot of gin or three is in order right about now, and then, finally, bedtime (nearly 2.45pm, but still....

Les-I keep your drinks seperate, go on, pick 'em up. Chemistry+Imagination=one(or more) of (at least)four probable outcomes
A.Something Blows Up
B.Nobel Prize
C.Bar Tender
D.You Pull A Curie With The Radiation Sickness

Tha's the idea.
Wouldya like some Texas Sweet Tea(non-alcholic the way it is).
It is minty-ish and very sweet. I think it may have jasmine as well(I don't put the teas together, this is my favorite tea in the history of ever).

RE: Grumpy is opening the bar...celebration time!
I have never blown anything up that wasn't on purpose aspiegrrl, in fact I am perhaps rediculously OVERcareful about such things...I have a bottle of THF here, a liter, for use as a solvent in the final preperation of my latest...project....its an ether, and most ethers are prone to forming peroxides in the atmosphere, and as such are usually shipped with a minute portion of one of a few different inhibitor compounds in there, a few fraction of a percent, but enough to retard the formation of the peroxide and hydroperoxide products, for even a year in storage.
This stuff is from a polish reseller, that just removes it from a larger drum, bottles it up and squeezes them until there is no airspace left before capping, and it is uninhibited.
I handle the stuff like it is the next thing to VX nerve agent, more or less, carefully check for peroxides any and every time its ever used, open/close/remove from bottle for use under inert gas flow, and fill the deadspace of the bottle with further portion of inert gas (argon), to prevent formation of the THF peroxide/hydroperoxides.
They are damn nasty if they form, extremely highly sensitive explosives, can crust around the screwcaps of a container if allowed to form, and any shock, or friction, even opening or setting it down a bit roughly on a counter/benchtop etc is quite capable of resulting in a hell of a bang (enough, for instance, in one case I know of, to blast somebody's lab fridge into pieces, blowing a large chunk through the ceiling, after blowing and igniting the THF (or might have been diethyl ether, both are prone to peroxidation) and tear the room to pieces.
So A is out, (hopefully), thats probably more careful than any average employed chemist will handle THF, diethyl ether, dioxane, and the like, as an example of my personal tendencies around such things. Only time I have ever had an explosion, was on a compound I synthesised many years back, as a kid, a tetraminecopper complex, I think, if I remember right the chlorate, and the nitrate also. They went off with a right bang, but realising it was near certain with the chlorate, and perfectly possible in the case of the nitrate, they were only produced in the region of a few hundred milligrams.
Did once, when much, much less experienced, have a real nasty accident that left its mark though, producing a substance which I shall most certainly not publicly name in a fair quantity, reacting a single precursor chemical with caustic soda dissolved in alcohol, and heated to reflux. Only I didn't at the time, know just how important boiling chips (add to reaction vessel to prevent sudden bumping and spraying etc as things get hot, just broken glass or porcelain chips, but they provide tiny surfaces for air bubbles to nucleate around, and stay small, rather than having the potential to erupt like old faithful gone psycho)
Only thats what it did, and would you bloody know it, at the one prescise moment I lifted my goggles to scratch an itch on my nose.
Boiling alcohol, with valuable precursor, and concentrated sodium hydroxide, erupted out of there, as it heated up very quickly on the reaction commencing after starting addition of the NaOH much too quickly.
Right smack bang in my right eye and over my face. I still have very poor distance vision from that eye, can't read huge sign print from five feet off, although close up vision is still OK. Glasses correct the sight defect, luckily, when I need to see something with stereo vision at a distance, or for reading.
Hurt like blazes, although I was working next to a tap, and had water on hand for emergencies like that, doused my face off, irrigated my eyes, for quite some time...most uncomfortable, using language that at that age I should probably never have heard in my life Then set about sucking up all the splattered reaction mixture from the benchtop, floor and surroundings, wiping the walls, windows and ceiling off with tissue, then going about extracting what I could from the sopping wet tissue to clean up and add to the content still left in the flask, took me most of the night, although I did manage to rescue a good amount.
B-you never know, maybe one day, that would be sweet as hell, although most biochemistry research involves these days, sick callous, heartless torturing monsters abusing animals in the worst imagineable ways. I absolutely refuse to do this, no matter what the procedure or test. I have nothing against say, drawing a small blood sample, if ever that was useful, swabbing skin/tongue gentlyfor a few cells to begin a culture, or isolate DNA for say, PCR analysis when eventually I get round to doing all the work building a PCR setup, electrophoresis chamber, electroporation/gene gun/photoporation equipment, but otherwise, animal experimentation is utterly, completely something I will have no hand in.
Bar tender-hmm, if only sombody would give me the chance at least to prove myself, or even an interview, could do, could do.
Pull a curie...well at the moment, I very seldom have any use for radiation sources, at least, never thus far a use for a powerful gamma radiation source, only ever, in anything I have done, used alpha particle emitters, for ionization sources, and unless ingested, an alpha radiation emitter is fairly benign, alpha radiation travels a mere few centimeters in air, and is stopped dead by a thin sheet of paper, the dead surface of one's skin, etc.
Curie did contribute a ton to science, although I am only prepared to do likewise if I am alive to tell the tale!
Only reason I would do something that might end up with the end of me, is if I had to pull something out of the hat fast, if ever my girl got sick enough that there was little else left but something that couldn't be tried by doctors.
Imagination...well I do a great diethyl or diisopropyl ether/vodka/codeine syrup cocktail sort of thing....hits like a an industrial sized truck convoy containing sledgehammers, and pretty tasty as long as you get the right brand of codeine linctus (not the one that tastes like fake, artificial sweetner orange...that stuff tastes hideous.)
Never liked jasmine tea, too flowery and insipid. I have tried a rose and black tea I like, and I love chinese white tea, though, sweetened with honey. In fact I think I might just have one right now.

Just what are you going to do about it? *hic*
Don't forget, for the time being, until you fix the dodgy hinge on the bar counter access flap, I live here, lady, propping the damn thing up.
*adjusts arse position to some more comfortable spot, and lights a cigar*
My wake up morning beer if you would be so kind, please barmaid.

Two Chinottos!
Oh, HECK YES! When me and my mom are in the car we joke that's my theme song. She and I both say that I'm too logical, intellectual(even in humor), cynical(when I've spent too much time reading the paper), yadda, yadda, yaddda, while also being some of the other things, i.e. simple(in a good way), not responsible(sometimes). It's sort of an ongoing joke between us. I love it.
