Autistic Pride Day - What Are Your Plans?

I was hoping that we could talk about what we (as individuals) are doing to celebrate Autistic Pride Day, which is coming up in just a week!

RE: Autistic Pride Day - What Are Your Plans?

My daughter will be out of town, so it will be a really nice mellow night at home.  I am going to ask my husband to tell me his dream meal, and I will make it for him exactly as requested.  Then we will do whatever activity he would like.  I am going to make it a sort of "Treat my husband well" day.

When is it again?

As the player's breath warms the fipple the tone clears.
It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.

June 18, although some are celebrating it on June 15, as they are working and cannot celebrate mid-week.

RE: Autistic Pride Day - What Are Your Plans?

Big APD plans here in Brisbane. My workplace has really taken the day on board, so after work we're going to have a showing of "Benny & Joon", and I'll be making a pre-movie speech about the history of the movement, the reason for the day, the significance of the movie, etc...

It's also going to be announced nationally by the department secretary, and I'm hoping it will also be celebrated in one way or another in all the different state offices.

*grins* Is good to see something happening - this day is pretty much our flagship, and if we can build it up to be celebrated worldwide (without being hijacked), we've pretty much won the rights campaign.

Kudos for the timely reminder, Kor!

I think it is really great that your workplace is doing so much!  That is really really impressive.  I am starting small this year, telling friends, family, and a few co-workers.  I think it is a good start.

More than anything else, I will celebrate my husband in all his Aspieness!  Cool

*grins* Poifect - the smaller events are just as important, and word of mouth can go a long way...

RE: Autistic Pride Day - What Are Your Plans?

Wow, what a coincidence!  I totally forgot about APD- but I already have a party planned for the 18th!!!  Ten of my friends are coming over to learn to cook an entire Japanese meal.  Then we will eat it while watching a Japanese movie ("Tampopo", although I doubt anyone here has seen it...), and afterward, we shall learn to do a Japanese "Para Para" dance.
I guess I can slip in a mention of APD to my friends, somewhere in there.  Most of them know about my interest in autism and some of them have even discussed Neurodiversity with me before.  I'll just have to be careful not to say anything about it while my Mom's around- she hates it when I mention anything about autism!  Sad

On the 15th I'll be at a picnic at the Albert Memorial in London.

On 18th - not doing much but will sent out a 'Happy APD' email at work and then have a relaxing / perseverating evening!

On the 18th I'll be representing my workplace at a pub quiz, part of the Exeter Corporate Games. That should be a chance to use my Aspie skills. Smile

It's very near to my birthday (16th) and I'll be insisting that both my spanish and english friends celebrate it in my husbands bar in town, and that anyone who walks through the doors will come on board.

On that day, I am working on a project with my local CIL (Center for Independent Living) and I might bring in some cookies to celebrate.

Is there a reason why your mom gets upset when you mention anything about autism? My mom does let me know about different autism related events in my hometown and let me decide if I want to attend them or not.
