I dunno if i'll be any good at this, it's just January to June. Dealing with how workplaces use IT and stuff like that, nothing too deep.

Hopefully the mixed age range will be beneficial ;p

"introductory certificate for IT @ work"

as well as learning about IT applications in the workplace, you will improve your personal effectiveness and develop your IT skills

whats more you can start in January and by July you could be in a stronger position to gain employment or progress to further study.

From the blurb, they make it sound so good too.

My son did a course at polytechnic in steel fabrication, the mixed age range was beneficial, really helped him. Also he has a talent for this kind of work, so it was something in which he was able to achieve highly - this helped as well.
My daughter is looking to do some sort of IT course next year, my husband tells me there is a shortage of IT specialists and there will always be work.
I think it is always good to start with a very basic course and work your way up as you gain more confidence. This strategy seems to help me.

Good luck it!!

See, I did a business course for a bit..two words.

Screaming. and Kids.

I know that's rather biased of me, I get on with people my own age just fine..my girlfriends in my age group, and I sort of have to get on with her Tongue

But..you know when you just want to bellow "SHUT THE *** UP AND LET ME WORK"  ? it was one of those situations.

IME most IT job specs ask for experience in particular programming languages as opposed to generic skills.

It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.

I can't imagine that qualification, on it's own, getting anybody into IT itself, it seems more geared to general admin, covering just the basics of IT? Best wishes with it, anyway!

Are you doing a "basic" skills course for pre-employment?  I took one.  I already had more skills than most of the people there.  Surprise that most of the totally inept knew how to use email very badly and facebook.  All through the class when were supposed to be working on the excel worksheet assignments there was mooing from farmville.

I am finding that most employers are asking for more than just basic word/excel/powerpoint/outlook.  They want blackberry, some basic website design and modifications, some video editing skills, designing apps.  This is for admin asst jobs.

At least teach people how to do web searches, find and open files, how to cut and paste.  There are the people who are sending you all these stupid emails with everyone's email that they just forward from everyone else.

I would use foam ear plugs.

You can laugh at the people who hold the mouse by the tail and say it does not work.

My manager asked me how to avoid selecting duplicates with an SQL query a few days ago. I googled the answer in about a minute (select distinct). Now he thinks I know stuff.

When I started in IT you didn't even need generic skills. Basic numeracy skills and a little aptitude was enough. Nowadays, as has been pointed out, you usually need very specific in-demand skills and qualifications. Or at least know how to bluff a little and use google.
