Joy, I like your post because it proves something I've been saying for some time. Not to this board - but in general.

When people behave like that, they think it's a joke or something along those lines. But when it's dished back at them - they get all bent out of shape. Moral of the story - if you can't take it, don't dish it out.

The pain they cause with their comments needs to be made crystal clear. That's the way I show it - by treating them the same way, and when they complain, my response is "how does it feel huh?" Or words to that effect.

Of course it doesn't always work - such as when people don't realise they have actually offended you and don't understand why. So when you fire back, you can understand why they are upset and angry. But of course us Aspies have to be told first (for the most part anyway)! Unless we've had previous practical experience in it!

Mind you - this doesn't apply when you tell the person they've offended you and they refuse to believe it.

Sorry - rambling just a tad there!

And that is a prime example of what I'm talking about. Refusal to believe. Enough said.

The battle is over, QD - I just won on a TKO. Tongue

In other words, I've said all I'm going to say to Wilky on this thread. She insulted me and continues to refuse to believe that she did and deserved what she got in retaliation. Hence the prime example.

Those pathetic NT's, with their snobbish appeal, are illogical, assuming, shallow monsters with little or no ability to put their own selves in our shoes!

Yes, I do like Sun Tzu.  Here are quotes to help our cause.

RE: Why do people hate us?

People dont like other people who are different from them(well at least most are like that). It really does appear to be a hardwired instinct. Often people dont know even know why so they make up some stupid bullshit to try to justify it.BTW aliengirl I started a thread all about hatingautism in the News and Media forum; the guy behind it is nothing but a insecure troll/******.

RE: Why do people hate us?

I think the parents are often afraid of what often happens to us.
1.  Let's not even bring up the fact that my college degree didn't get me out of the house (it did after my Master's for Federal work).  With a Master's, some experience, and a decided advantage over recent college grads, I never worked in applied research again after Marshall University.

At least the state of Maryland intervened, sending me to its VR facility to learn computer programming under Community College of Baltimore County faculty.

2.  I am still single at age 37.
3.  I did get bullied in high school, college, and graduate school.
4.  I was molested, age 8.
5.  I was not old enough to live on my own before age 28 (at all), and not permanently until the following year.
6.  No grandchildren in the lifetime of my parents.

Parents paint a nicer picture of their kids growing up and the reality we frequently have scares the ____ out of them.

The fact is that our culture, in general, is not yet ready to utilize our mental gifts.  The best you can hope for is the occasional employer, the occasional lover, the occasional school system and so on.

RE: Why do people hate us?

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

Has anyone here ever been bullied / abused / discriminated against because of AS?

I was beaten by my parents because of it (to the extent that bones were broken from age 2).
Although I now don't really have contact with my parents, and am in my 20s, I still get problems with people shouting abuse at me if they notice me stimming.

For example, the other day I was catching an underground train. I was stimming as travelling during rush hour makes me anxious and stimming is almost an involuntary response when I am really anxious. As I got on the train and the door closed, some people pushed me (there was a lot of room, so they pushed me quite hard) and then pulled my arm so that it got shut in the doors. It really hurt and I now have a huge bruise, 2 weeks on. I phoned the complaints line, but they said they couldn't do anything.

I also get people shouting abuse at me in the street. Often people I don't even know and have never even spoken to. I guess they must see me stimming (although I try not to in public) or maybe my awkward way of walking, or the fact that I look anxious - I don't know - but people just can't seem to help themselves.

When I contact the relevant organisations, they don't really seem to care. I've only resorted to contacting the police a few times, but without witnesses it is difficult for them to do anything - and although these indicents occur in public places, where there are loads of potential witnesses, I don't actually know any of them, and there tends to be an 'I don't want to get involved' culture, so I doubt that anyone would ever come forward as a witness. And also when I tell people what happened, they often say 'subtle' versions of well-what-do-you-expect-?

Yep. It's why I don't work - because I was treated like that in the work place, and the whole thing was judged not on the behaviour of others, but my responses. Because I never got closure on it - and as it stands the way I was treated was correct (which to any reasonable person it was anything but). For example - one employer accused me of "wilful misconduct" (this was before I was DXed with Aspergers) when in fact I was provoked. That view was confirmed by the Australian Administrative Appeals Tribunal. I tried to get the issue re-opened after my DX, but they played the "out of time" card and concentrated on that refusing to even acknowledge the diagnosis!

Another employer (who I was working for at the time of my diagnosis) seemed OK, but then when my DX arrived they changed their tune and engineered a scenario that had me judged as "unfit for employment with the Australian Public Service" - and consequently lost my job. I tried to fight that one as well, but they claimed unjustifiable hardship (which is a big problem in Australian Law) so my hands were tied.

I haven't worked since. (April 1997)

That's why my back goes up (so to speak) when anyone accuses me of bludging. How can I go into an environment where I have no protection from abuse? That has to change before I'll even think about rejoining the work force.

*ignores the insincere and mocking "apology" above*

Thankyou for helping my son, my brother and my boyfriend. We're all indebted to you.
I don't need to walk in your NT shoes though. I have a few pairs of my own.

RE: Why do people hate us?

I'm not sure if it is that mainstream people hate us; I think it is more that they are indifferent.  This may be why people support Autism Speaks: they saw an ad on NBC and they think "oh, how terrible" and they pick up the phone to make a pledge, and then it all slips right off of their radar.

The thing is, most people do not live examined lives and they do not see much further into the future than next week.  Unless they have a family member who is on the spectrum, none of it really registers.

Thankyou for saying this. I totally agree with you. Most people, as you say, don't see much further into the future than next week and the general public are mostly either indifferent, ignorant or have never heard of Autism or Aspergers syndrome.

In six years I have never felt the slightest iota of "hate" towards my autistic son from anyone. I have found the contrary to be true.
I love and respect a wonderful autistic man, and find the title and comments on this and other threads offensive to NT's who love and cherish the autistic people in their lives.

I don't hate, dislike or look down on anyone because they're on the autistic spectrum, but this does not mean I should have to tolerate or not react to people who are personally insulting and offensive towards me because of their personality. Autistic or not.

I've had stuff like this happen to me, too, throughout the years (not as much lately though--I'm now 26), I find it's a result of two things put together that people notice:

1) Not wearing trendy clothes (I guess NTs assume if you're not dressing to impress women, you might be gay)
2) Anxious/awkward way of walking

I don't change my wardrobe to please idiots on the street, though, and I won't.  As much as I hate morons shouting at me.

But I find a good way to avoid a lot of this, for males at least, is to "walk with rhythm" because it implies confidence for some reason.  Just walk with a "light sway."  I had to learn to walk this way in high school, and once I did, suddenly things got a lot better.  It didn't work in every situation though, and the jerks still picked up on my constant anxiety.  But it still worked.
