Quiet Aspie Girls and Loud Aspie Boys

It seems that there are a large number of anecdotes about quiet Aspie girls and loud Aspie boys.

Meltdowns seem to involve falling to the ground and crying for girls but screaming and hitting for boys.

Boys seem to be reported as being more aggressive about not joining in group activities etc.

This trend seems to apply to young children (pre-school), older kids, and adults. From my own recollection I think I was relatively quiet when young but learned to be extremely aggressive when a teenager (it was the only way to survive high-school).

I know that by starting a thread this way I'll get most attention from quiet boys and loud girls, so it'll take more than a few posts saying "I don't fit either stereo-type" to convince me (citations for any good research will be appreciated).

In terms of diagnosis, for parents it seems easy to ignore the fact that a quiet girl might need to see a psychologist and schools aren't going to push the issue. But for a boy who screams and breaks things parents are more likely to seek help and schools are likely to compel them to if they are unwilling.

Could this be part of the explanation for why the number of males diagnosed with HFA/AS is so much greater than the number of females?
