"Autism more common" 1 in 88 in U.S. as per CDC
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-5...-children/
Excerpts:
info from 14 "areas" around the country since "every state is not included"
"2008 surveillance year show more than 11 out of 1,000 8-year-old kids have been identified as having an ASD, about a 23 percent increase since the last CDC report in 2009. Some of this increase is due to the way children are identified, diagnosed and served in their communities, although exactly how much is due to these factors is unknown."
"Boys are still about five times more likely to be diagnosed with autism in the U.S. than girls, according to the CDC report. It estimated one in 54 boys have autism, while one in 252 girls do. The number of children identified with ASDs ranged from 1 in 210 children in Alabama to 1 in 47 children in Utah. The largest increases were among Hispanic and black children."
My two cents- I do not believe these statistics - I believe there is too much mis diagnosing - no where in the first "article" "reporting" of which I am quoting here re: the CDC "findings" does it even mention ADD or ADHD - are those "conditions" or PDD-NOS included in the broad term ASD? (NOTE THE TITLE says Autism but the CDC reports on "autism Spectrum Disorder" hmmm - must be based on the old dsm (IV)
I live in NJ - and we used to (until this report - seem to have the most dxd autistic (boys)...) it wsa like 1 in 75 boys or seomthing - meanwhile - I know WAY more than 75 boys (I must know 500) and I only know of 3 - I tend to think that it is more like 1 in 100(lol MY stats I beleive and NOT "theirs" and mine are NOT "scientific" at all..
anyway - I posted the link to the article - "just in time" for APril "Autism awareness month" (in the USA)
You know what - I will do a poll too...

RE: "Autism more common" 1 in 88 in U.S. as per CDC
Pages 5, 6 and 7 of the report from the CDC site... http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/documen...Report.pdf
show which states were involved and much more info - for those who are interested.
Oh - here is New Jersey as per CDC from 2008 ONE IN 29 boys?
RESULTS
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Prevalence, 2008
Number of children identified with ASDs: 145
Total prevalence of ASDs: 20.5 per 1, 000 (or 1 in 49)
Boys: 34.2 per 1,000 (or 1 in 29)
Girls: 5.8 per 1,000 (or 1 in 172)
Race/ Ethnicity
White: 21.0 per 1,000
Black: 20.6 per 1,000
Hispanic: 20.0 per 1,000
Documented ASD Diagnosis
Children with ASD diagnosis in their records: 68%
Median earliest age ASD was documented in their records:
4 years, 10 months
Autistic Disorder: 3 years, 2 months
ASD/PDD: 4 years, 3 month
Asperger Disorder: 5 years, 6 months
Oh and these #'s are NOT including ADD ! it does not seem real to me.

RE: "Autism more common" 1 in 88 in U.S. as per CDC
Okay I saw one thing.. and I won't post again for awhile - as I have to read more in depth.
This is WHO apparently was being looked at.
It is 8 year olds..
and
" Project is a
multisource investigation to determine and monitor the number of 8-year-old children in the population with ASDs or
intellectual disability"
hmmm.. intellectual disability - is there some kind of big failure in the educational establishment? sort of shocking numbers...
sorry, I'll "learn" more before another posting of my stream of consciousness...

This is confusing...
What is?
Forget the poll - whatever..
forget what I write - click on the first link... read...
or don't
I will stop posting now for a while.
My only reason for posting a new thread is that this is "new" info and the numbers are startling (and not believable) to me and I need to check this out.

Why will you stop posting? Only reason I said it was confusing was where do they get their stats?

I gave the link to the CDC in my second post
I was going to stop posting so I could read more... so I would not be confusing just posting every time I had a thought..

Thanks for the links. The number of 1 in 88 seems realistic, as far as I can see. About the misdiagnoses - they don't exist because these people have "nothing" but because they prefer a dx on the autistic spectrum to a borderline dx, e.g.; so, they still have problems which need to be tackled.

RE: "Autism more common" 1 in 88 in U.S. as per CDC
I see now why the stats are like they are.
The "ADDM network" also included "records" from not only diagnosed kids but those who had "other behaviors consistent with ASD's, even without diagnosis" so also developmental delays, behavioral issues and intellectual disabilities (depending on the state)
Apparently aut spks likes the 23% higher number... “We have used the ADDM data to
raise public awareness of autism by
43 percent through our Ad Council
campaign and other efforts. And, these
data are also very useful in guiding
some of our research funding decisions.”
– Mark Roithmayr, President, Autism Speaks
From the ADDM (that CDC used) Community Report From the
Autism and Developmental Disabilities
Monitoring (ADDM) Network
Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs)
Among Multiple Areas of the United States in 2008
Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
From the ADDM report excerpt:
What Is Prevalence?
Prevalence is a scientific term describing the number of individuals with a disease or condition among a defined group
of people at a specific period in time. For example, we estimated the prevalence of ASDs among 8-year-olds in 2008 in
Atlanta, Georgia, by counting all of the 8-year-olds in Atlanta who were identified with ASDs, and then dividing that
number by the total number of 8-year-olds living in Atlanta during 2008. By monitoring ASDs in the same way over time,
we can find out whether more, fewer, or the same number of children are being identified with ASDs.
Estimating the prevalence of ASDs at any given time is not
simple. Prior to the ADDM Network, the United States did not
have a system to track ASDs in multiple communities. Some
challenges we still face are:
1. The change to a broader, more inclusive, definition of
ASDs(8, 9). This means more people could be classified as
having ASDs over time.
2. There is no medical test for ASDs. Diagnosis of ASDs
depends on observations of behavior and development.
Number of 8-year-olds with ASDs divided by Total number of 8-year-olds equals PREVALENCE
My state, New Jersey's "report" came from ONE county only! Union County by the way.

One in 29 boys is skewed (the stat for New Jersey). Though in Union County no doubt the way education is set up I would think a lot of boys have a hard time sitting still and focusing - I am more than concerned about the furture of all our children....

Yeah good question.. no wonder people think it is a disease - it is part of the US Dept of Helaht & Human Services - maybe the Human Services part?
fine print on bottom of first page:
Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
This community report summarizes the main findings from the following published report: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders–Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, United States, 2008. Morbidity and Mortal Weekly Report (MMWR) 2012; Vol. 61(3).
To read the MMWR report in its entirety, go to http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr.
To read more about autism, go to CDC’s autism site at http://www.cdc.gov/autism.
The findings and conclusions in this report are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

RE: "Autism more common" 1 in 88 in U.S. as per CDC
I am notin gthe AASP and the ADDM "charts" are totally differnet - yet the #'s making the headlines are the way higher ADDM ones...
FOr example looking at the state of alabama - that is what aasp stands for first letter Alabama .. The Alabama Autism Surveillance Program (AASP) see link and go to page 7 for example
http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/documen...Report.pdf
Is it just me or is this screwy?
Maybe this is all showing the failure of the education model?
Nj is The New Jersey Autism Study (NJAS)

After the DSM changes this fall, it is said the 'epidemic' of newly DX`ed chidren will fall off dramatically
I'm not anti-social; I'm just not user friendly
