How did you feel when you first got your diagnosis?
I felt a bit funny. Like...Someone had told me something I already expected, but at the same time I was a bit shocked. It made things alot more clear, and it was nice to finally put a name on something that's been bugging me for a while, but also, I felt like I was a different person. I dunno, it's weird...I'm still trying to get my head round it. How did you feel? Tell me?
The Doctor: The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant. And we definitely added to his pile of good things.

RE: How did you feel when you first got your diagnosis?
I felt a bit unsettled. I'd never thought I had a disorder or disability of any sort, but I'd realized long ago that I was different, and I had come to accept it and even to be proud of it. I still feel like that now, but when I was first diagnosed I was taken off-guard because I'd thought that the weird things I did were just idiosyncrasies. Realizing I have AS made me feel at first like those things really didn't make me unique after all, but that feeling wore off quickly as I learned more about autism. Now I think knowing about my AS explains a lot about me, but I'm still uniquely me - and actually, I'm rather glad to know there are people out there like me.
If they take my hand, will it be to burn me or to say amen?

I was pleased when I finally got diagnosed, because it explained 43 years of wondering why I never quite "fit in" with the ease of everybody else, no matter what I did. And I found out that not only are there other Aspies out there, the majority of them are nice people and I like them.

I felt like "Oh great, another reason I'm a freak."
I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it will be with a knife.

My feelings exactly, except for 67 years of wondering.

Like ***. I felt really awful about it, and had a lot of internalized ableism. The horrible doctors who tried to hint that I couldn't feel things like love or sadness because of my autism certainly didn't help

RE: How did you feel when you first got your diagnosis?
At 9 years old, it didn't really mean that much to me. It was mostly just a way to categorize people like me. Later, when I started reading more about autism, most of my thoughts were "don't these researchers ever talk to the people they're studying?" I'm pretty proud of it now, and I'm always happy to talk about it with people that want to know more.

RE: How did you feel when you first got your diagnosis?
I don't have a diagnosis, I have chosen not to get one.
I was actually investigating aspergers syndrome in relation to my son and the more I read the more it made sense in regard to myself, my brother and my son.
The only reservation of any sort that I have had is that I feel less of an "individual" now that I know that there are many others out there with very similar traits.

RE: How did you feel when you first got your diagnosis?
I wondered if getting diagnosed was a good idea... the diagnosis was okay to me at the time, but the assessment he typed up was wrong. I felt humiliated beyond any humiliation I had ever experienced in my albeit short life. Anger too, at the doctor for being careless at my expense, at the expense of my reputation.
Genocide is defined as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, social, political, economic, intellectual, familial, genetic, or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."

The psych clinic was careful to say it wasn't classic autism because I was already almost done with grad school. (Maybe LFA do graduate from grad school, I don't know.)

I was happy, relieved, thrilled, etc. I finally had a diagnosis and it made me feel less crazy.
