Celebrity culture - do you understand it?

I've got to ask, is it me, or do other people have "issues" with the NT fascination of celebrity culture?

In particular, I find the media/NT fascination with enormous bosomed Jordan(aka "Katie Price") incredible.  By her own admission she's put it about a bit.  It looks like she wears so much make up she has to tip her head back to get her eyes open.  There's no part of Jordan's life that she hasn't sold/told to the media, including sex, sex, sex, more sex, sex with another person, sex in another position, marriage to Peter Andre, separation from Peter Andre, dating/separating from some "cage fighter", wanting to get back with "Pete", etc, etc, etc.  She's in endless magazines/newspapers every week.

The same is true of the late Jade Goodie.  (Yes, a tragic ending - for which she reputedly got £700,000 for photographs before dying.  But she was a racist.  She was (in)famous for being thick.)  Paris Hilton seems to positively delight in not being the sharpest tool in the box.

These people sell every minute of their lives to the likes of OK, Hello, Take a Break, Now, and other vapid, pointless magazines.

I'm firmly of the belief that whole rain forests buckle over and offer themselves up as magazine fodder at the merest hint that Jordan has discovered a previously unknown area of her "g" spot (though I'd find that hard to believe)

For years I said I'd stop reading "The Times" (after 20 something years) the moment 'that woman' got on to the front pages, and sure enough she did, and sure enough I stopped.

I've more or less stopped watching television because I can't cope with the endless posturing, preening, and hawking of these tedious people.

I'm no intellectual.  What intelligence I have comes from educating myself through reading.  I just don't understand "celebrity culture" <badly disguised yawn>.

No, I don't understand it at all.  I find it very depressing, to be honest.

Thank you, Marcia.  I always value your opinion.  To me it seems as though much of the world is more than happy to dumb down.  Shame.

RE: Celebrity culture - do you understand it?

Neither understand nor hold any interest.
Unfortunately several females including two in my family are interested in their daily ''struggles'' in the world.

I think it is so utterly stupid that they are given so much money (same with footballers, singers, actors) when there are so many people who deserve the money more (doctors that actually save lives for example).  However that is the way society is...yet if you get too much money that you don't know what to do with it.  They generally use it on either drugs, drink or cosmetic surgery.  It would be much better to give the excess money to charities or campaigns (like the WWW:World Wild Life Fund)..not spend it for selfish own gains.

Whilst I understand your point.
After all some celebrities are celebrities by the talent merits unlike a few others..or aren't talented.

I do still feel that they are being paid far too much.  Some people excel in all regions of occupationsBig Grinoctors, Historians, biologists but they aren't celebrities..except for within their own profession..nor do they get paid the ridiculous amounts.

If they commit a crime..they are not only fined but can be sentenced to prison.  When a celebrity (not all I'm just basing of a few..namely some footballers)..when they commit a crime..they may or may not be fined but they won't be sentenced to prison.  That is also ridiculous.

Everyone should be equal no matter if you are royal, celebrity or not.

Aye, not only that but there are girls as young as ten who see this as the right way to behave.

no I don't understand it. In fact, I have been known to argue with my mum when she has been watching some celebrity programs. I find it irritating, not just dull.

Your score: 47
0 - 10 = low 11 - 22 = average (most women score about 15 and most men score about 17) 23 - 31 = above average 32 - 50 is very high (most people with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism score about 35).

RE: Celebrity culture - do you understand it?

I don't understand the point of it all. I thought it was because I didn't know enough about the subject so I watched a few shows about them. After having learnt more about about it, I just think it's sad that someone is interested that X went to a restaurant and bought Y and left Z tip. At least, that happens less often here, there are little to no paparazzis here in quebec and it is considered quite rude to invade someone's privacy like that, even if they are well known.

I can understand that someone looks up to a person that is really talented in a specific discipline but this is just way over the line.

Admirability is one thing especially as you said Patrice (also good to see you back on hereSmile) if the person is talented in a specific area..but to focus repeatedly on these people..and worship them like heroes then..it's utterly butter....it's so ridiculous and I will never understand the hype.

Yes I argue on the subject with my mum (and sister) too when they watch Jordan's reality show or the recent one is the Celebrity in the rainforest.

RE: Celebrity culture - do you understand it?

Hmm...  not sure where I stand on this one.  With my special interest being fashion, I tend to read a lot of the "so and so wore such and such on the red carpet" type things.  But for most celebrities, the red carpet is frankly part of their jobs.

I couldn't care less what Angelina Jolie's 15th adopted kid ate for breakfast or who Robert Patterson is sleeping with this hour, though.  I only care insomuch as its related to a special interest of mine.  Outside of that...  blah.

And they're all disgustingly overpaid.  I don't care HOW good at acting you are, you shouldn't make more in one movie than the yearly GDP of several small nations.  Ever.
