Mobile phones/cellphones - DJ_Sim - 02-02-2005 04:18 AM

I bought a new mobile phone today. Its a Samsung E330 which is a very nice lightweight silver flip-phone with a built-in camera, WAP, and Java games. The main reason why I bought it is because the ringtones sound louder and clearer than my old phone.

I'm still keeping my old phone so that I can take it to most places and not having to worry about my new one getting stolen. I will use my new Samsung phone for special occasions and home use.

Does anyone else have mobile phones/cellphones and do they use them for anything other than calling?

- Dreamer - 02-02-2005 05:38 AM

I don't even have one (I know, that sounds crazy). Why would I need one, I don't have any friends I need to talk to or SMS.

- Pauric - 02-02-2005 11:55 AM

I have one, but I don't use it much. My parents got it for me because they rarely know where I am. I hate talking on the phone unless I am alone in my room, and it's a frend, so I mostly just send SMS messages from it.

- Stella - 02-02-2005 07:43 PM

I had a mobile 'phone for about  nine  months, but I think I only ever received two or three calls in all that time, so it wasn't worth going on with.

- Catffienated - 02-02-2005 08:02 PM

I have one, but I use it for the radio and emergencies. So I checked other. Right now it can't make calls, but I don't care.

- Raeth - 02-05-2005 03:55 PM

I have a nice one, but it's on 3G services, which has an awful lame spending deal which doesn't work for me.

- DJ_Sim - 02-07-2005 04:00 AM

I don't want to go on 3 either. They are 3G based and very limited for content, just like AOL before that was integrated into the internet.

- Uschi - 02-07-2005 05:40 AM

I have one just for emergencies. I take it along when going on long drives, and when driving in the winter. Once in the winter, when driving with five children in the van I hit sheer ice, and slid into the opposite ditch in an isolated area (fortunately, the footboard kept us upright on the deep snow). We sat there for three hours before a tow truck happened by (there were cars in ditches all over the place, several people got killed that night).

After that, driving in slick conditions has always scared me to death. That's why my husband finally gave me a cell phone three years ago for Christmas. But everybody who goes on long drives uses it.

We  have only the emergency plan (which is the cheapest one), because I wouldn't use it other than for emergencies anyway. It is never turned on, because I would hate it if people would actually call me while driving or being somewhere. Nobody even knows the number.

- Gareth - 02-07-2005 10:43 AM

I have a mobile sitting at home with dead batteries and probably lost the number from not turning it on in months.
I checked other because i do have a phone but don't use it.

- monastic - 02-07-2005 03:55 PM

Cell Phones have really opened up my life and the lives of my son and his father.  One of my worst fears was driving somewhere and getting lost or confused and turned around, not to mention my car breaking down.  I don't fear these things anymore because I know I can always call for help.  I seem to be better at going places that I normally wouldn't go, now.

As for my son, he uses his phone to call family, mostly.  When he is having a particularly hard day at work, he knows he can call me anytime and talk to me about it which seems to help us cope.  When he is overloaded calling to talk even for a few minutes, has helped him make it through the day, many times as it has for me, too.

Having a cell phone has helped my sons father the most.  He used to not pick up the phone at home for fear it would be someone selling something or wanting a donation.  He has a very hard time talking with these folks and has been manipulated into buying things he didn't really want because he finds difficulty in saying no to pushy people.  There were times when family didn't hear from him for weeks.  Now, with his own cell phone, he calls everyone regularly and has no worries that a stranger is calling him on his cell phone.  He also calls me when life's stresses become too overwhelming for him.  He knows he can call anytime.  Cell phones have improved our lives alot.

- Noetic - 02-07-2005 04:43 PM

I hate making calls, although I got better at it. Being able to text someone to see if they are out or may want to meet up is so much easier and doesn't require instant response  8)

monastic Wrote:

Actually, that is something I forgot to mention (probably the phone took this fear away, so I don't think much about it any more). I get lost very, very easily. When I am lost I get upset and confused and often don't know what to do. So, I will call either whoever I was going to visit, or my husband. Most of the time I just need them to calm me down so I can think again, to figure out what to do. It's worst when it is dark, as I am afraid of the dark. Plus, you can't see very far in the dark, and things just seem to be closing in around me.

Mind you, after finding out about AS, I realized that I am not just crazy, and that I can overcome this problem (to a degree). Now, when I know I am going somewhere unfamiliar, I make my own directions. The problem in many cases of getting lost was, following somebody else's directions. And they seem to just imply things, or assume too much (omitting details that to them are obvious). Or they would say: Go North (or whatever direction), instead of left or right. But if you have a poor sense of direction and don't know where north is, you've got a problem.

So, now the night before going anywhere I get out my maps, and I map the best route and write it down in large letters (so I can read it without reading glasses) and in great detail. That works when there are no detours. I still get lost and might need to call if anything is different (and detours are different and often very confusing). But often I just stop somewhere safe and get out my trusty maps, find where I am and where I need to go to find my way again.

But I don't do city driving, I am hopeless in big cities. I am talking here about country driving (like the six-hour-trip to Ottawa to see our oldest daughter and her family), or any of the other places our kids are. If I'd try to drive into Toronto, no phone would help, I'd end up in tears anyway. So, I just go to the subway station on the outskirts and take public transportation to wherever I am going.

- DJ_Sim - 02-08-2005 01:09 AM

This may be off-topic but have you thought about getting GPS Uschi?

- Uschi - 02-08-2005 07:12 AM

No, not really, I know those are quite expensive. I haven't really looked into how those work, maybe I should and decide if I want one. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you do decide to, PM me as my partner works with that kind of stuff, has tested a fair few of them (he does not drive but also gets lost easily) and knows which ones are decent and which ones don't work properly.

- Uschi - 02-08-2005 02:53 PM

Thanks, Noetic, I'll keep it in mind and will let you know if and when I want one.

Which phones? - DJ_Sim - 02-20-2005 06:11 PM

I have a Motorola C350 on Vodafone and a Samsung SGH-E330 on O2, and I can make ringtones on both. The Samsung is the best for making ringtones because its got an FM Synthesizer.

Which phones do you all have?

- Aeolienne - 02-21-2005 04:07 PM

I have a mobile but I don't have a landline in my flat. It's a Nokia. I chose a polyphonic ringtone called "Fantasie" in its gallery: it's actually Chopin's Impromptu Piano Fantasie in C# minor.

My dad's programmed his mobile so that it will play a different tune for different members of the family. For me he chose the Cat from Peter and the Wolf (as he plays the clarinet it has a personal significance for him); the other family members are represented by some of Schubert's Lieder. I suggested that he extend the Schubert theme by having me represented by Heidenröslein, as I'm the rose between two thorns (meaning I have an older and a younger brother).

I've often thought it would be cool if my mobile would play a different ringtone depending on the type of call. So if it were chit-chat it would play the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka and if it were something serious it would play Dies Irae from Mozart's Requiem.

- DJ_Sim - 02-21-2005 06:39 PM

What are your favourite tunes of all time?

- Aeolienne - 02-21-2005 06:56 PM

Not all tunes will sound good transposed to a mobile-phone jingle. Allegri's Miserere, oh God, please no!

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Electric Dragon - 04-28-2007 11:53 AM

I have a Sony Ericsson V600i. Before that, I had the phone Maria (my girlfriend) has, Nokia 6600 - probably Nokia's best color phone ever.

My default tone is 愛情當入樽 by Twins but Maria has Delta Goodrem's 'Butterfly', as that was the first song I dedicated to her.

Not too sure about favourite but the default Nokia Tune is so bloody irritating. Someone I know turned that into a full blown 7 minute trance song!!

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - blacktext - 04-28-2007 02:02 PM

I have a blackberry which I use mostly for the mobile internet. Also it serves as my main phone line. Although I rarely talk on the phone the number is useful for important calls, emergencies, and times when I'm on the go.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Meega Na La Queesta - 04-29-2007 11:17 PM

No cell here.  I loathe the things. Well, not the actual phones, but the unbelievably rude (and, while driving, dangerous) behavior of so many of the people who use them.  Oblivious loud yakking away about their personal business in designated quiet places.....(grrrrr)

I also have no at-home internet access, no answering machine, no DVD player, and no IPod gadgets.  Smile

I was surprised to see that "no" is currently the highest answer in the poll, and by so much, since so many of us seem to like tech gadgets. Maybe it's an Aspie thing - cell phones being primarily meant for social communication...

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - krispyg76 - 04-29-2007 11:48 PM

I like my mobile I have a Sony Ericsson W810i, it allows me to make calls, send texts, it has a camera and video camera on it, a nice size memory and also plays mp3s and has a radio.

All of that on one little phone - amazing

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Natalie - 04-30-2007 04:51 AM

I probably spend the most time using it to send text messages, but sometimes I also use it to talk to my mom or my friends.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Callista - 04-30-2007 06:05 AM

My mom has been nice enough to pay for my cell phone as part of a sort of family plan. It's a very low-tech one, compared to most--one of the type you can get free with certain calling plans. However, it does satisfy my need for a telephone line, so I'm content.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Athlynne - 04-30-2007 08:59 AM

No.  I'm never away for long from those who might need to get ahold of me.  And usually, when I'm out, I'm with my sister, who is permanently attached to her cell, so there's one around if I should have to make a call.  Highly unlikely, though.

Smile  I hate the thought of having to stop what I'm doing every time I hear an annoying ring.

LOL, same here.  Even if I'm just taking a walk in the park and I haven't had my cell phone ring in over a week (usually the case) I *still* don't like to answer.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - tenaciouscj - 04-30-2007 12:59 PM

If I got one, I would get pre-paid and just a simple, basic model. I hate with a passion anything by Crazy Frog so wouldn't get any Crazy Frog ringtones.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Electric Dragon - 04-30-2007 01:18 PM

One thing that annoys me is kids who play music out of their phones at the highest volume. I keep telling them it's a PHONE and not a MUSIC PLAYER!!

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - ῦ - 04-30-2007 01:51 PM

urgh, and the speakers that they are playing it though are so TINNY! and they go and download the smallest filesize they can find,so its just.urgh.

luckily i have my headcans Tongue
(which are..actually louder than my PSP can go..so i can sit and play Heavy Metal at their tinny >insert explicit<

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Lestat - 04-30-2007 04:52 PM

I would be lost without my phone, I need a new one actually, as my current phone is an 8-bit piece of *** nokia 3210, real stoneage stuff, but I got it in the first place from a fiend of mine for about 3 grams of self-picked shrooms, after my previous phone died a death.

Beggars can't be choosers, as they say Tongue

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Electric Dragon - 04-30-2007 05:14 PM

I miss my 3210 - was a tough little bugger. Got dropped in the bath and survived a 60C wash!!

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - quickduck - 04-30-2007 06:40 PM

I'm not keen on mobile phones.

I hate the idea of people being able to contact me wherever I am. That being said I was convinced by my wife I should get one for 'emergencies'. Although she contacts me on my phone all the time, asking what time I'll be home, whether I'd do something for while I'm out etc (its very annoying! lol) But I can’t turn it off in case there's a real emergency.

I don't have a very modern phone. Its small-ish (not a house brick). But the ring tone's quite embarrassing (very beepy)  I work for an IT company and am surrounded by highly paid techie people (mostly men) who always rush out to buy the latest model. They compete to see who's got the smallest (I wonder what Freud would have said about that?)

Aside from communicating with my wife, the only other thing I use my phone for is to remind myself of something. I rarely if ever send a text message (usually because I don’t have credit); But I do use the message draft function to remember stuff (things to do, ideas for poems mostly).

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - sarahjoke - 04-30-2007 06:59 PM

I have a cell, hubby and I both do... instead of a homeline, because we are cheap and have a lot of family out of state and kids that may occasionally need to contact us. Smile But I used to only use the phone part (calling and receiving that is) until I discovered the alarms so that keeps me on track (so I don't skip picking daughter #1 up because I've spent all of daughter #2's naptime on AFF hee hee hee) Hubby always wants to get the coolest newfangled contraption... and while I do like new shiny things, I really don't want to learn a new way of doing what I already do on my old phone...

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - theosoph - 04-30-2007 07:34 PM

I got my first cell phone last year. I hardly use it at all. I only use it to comunicate with two people, my neighbor and my friend. Now I'm stuck with paying $40 a month for it for two years.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Kazuto - 04-30-2007 09:00 PM

i have a phone that i got a few Christmases(sp?) ago, though it's not turned on. it's a Virgin Mobile phone, so it's Pay-as-you-Go and i need to top up. what i mostly use it for is to take pics of stuff. wish i had free nights/weekends, but that requires a credit card.. -.-

That's one reason I'm not too keen on getting one - it would be annoying being interrupted too often. But it makes it hard when there is an emergency if you don't have one. It's a real conundrum. Maybe you could ask your wife to call you only if it's a real emergency, but then I suppose she would say she only calls when it is important anyway.

So would I!  I may finally get one this year, just for emergencies though, or for calling back the cab company, while I'm waiting outside my house, to check on whether my cab is almost there.  Funny how cellphones are now used against their owners as an instrument of nagging...often on the bus someone's phone will ring, he'll answer it, then a moment later he'll say, "I'm on the bus right now."  Then he'll get out a minute later!  Some people have no patience at all! This is the downside of people being able to reach each other at any moment of the day or night.  Sometimes it's nice to have a few minutes of quiet and privacy while traveling.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Pakrat - 05-02-2007 01:49 PM

Of course, the short-term solution to that problem is to shut the phone off, but it seems once people know you have a cellphone they expect it to be on all the time and get angry when they can't reach you...Rolleyes

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Sat_Chit_Anand - 05-02-2007 02:41 PM

I am trying to get a telephone which will do multiple texts and which looks a bit better than my current one.

I do need a new telephone, but in order to get a contract (which works out cheaper than pay-as-you-go) I need to have a debit account.

I am a routine freak and what I am working on the moment is putting my daily routine into my telephone so that I can make the most of my time.

I am going to pioneer a daily routine on my current phone and work to that until I have a debit account and can upgrade.

I spend about £80 a month on my telephone, mostly sending text messages. I would be better paying £40 a month on a contract.

The new LG Prada telephone looks really stylish, rather like the new i-Phone which is not available in the UK yet.

However, I think that I am going to buy a very small Sony Ericsson.

I do not need one of those PDA phones, they are too complex for my needs.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Bob Bobson - 05-02-2007 02:48 PM

I almost never use my mobile phone.
I hardly ever take it with me anywhere, which is unfortunate if there is an emergency of sorts and somebody needs to contact me.
It is almost never charged anyway.
I use mine mostly as a clock and an alarm.

Very solid phone though and I notice phones in the lates 90s were built more sturdily and tended to last much longer than the ones we have today.

It makes me laugh to think how we used to get by without mobile
phones.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Pakrat - 05-07-2007 11:33 AM

I still get by without a mobile phone....

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Lestat - 05-10-2007 05:18 PM

Oops, I meant 4210, thats twice I've made that mistake in like 2 weeks, I'm still bloody waiting for a local place to get a 4210 data cable in stock because i made that mistake again :/

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Electric Dragon - 05-11-2007 09:31 PM

Nokia haven't made a 4210 - you mean 3210.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - normally_impaired - 05-11-2007 11:21 PM

Didn't see it mentioned earlier, but I figured I'd mention that (in the USA anyway) ANY cellphone, activated or not can still call 911.  So if you have a phone that you stopped paying for and it's inactive, it's still a good thing to keep handy.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - krispyg76 - 05-13-2007 10:01 AM

I can't see how a 3210 would have a data cable though.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Lestat - 05-17-2007 01:00 PM

Oh its not that I stopped paying for my phone, I only use pre-pay phones, bought with cash, and of course, topped up cash only, I like to keep a low profile, and I also like buggering around with phones, making them do things the manufacturers didn't intend them to do, or at least, didn't intend consumers to do.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Electric Dragon - 05-19-2007 02:45 PM

I'd be lost without mine - I'm not totally reliant like most people, but alongside email and chat, it's one of links I have with my girlfriend. I usually send her a text just before I go to bed and when I wake up, and they really cheer her up!

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - energeia - 05-19-2007 04:49 PM

No cell phone here.  My home phone and work phone both have answering machines.  I don't like it how public phone booths are disappearing (like in airports)--not EVERYONE has a cell phone or should have to have one.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - tenaciouscj - 05-20-2007 10:12 AM

You know, I think mobile phones should be invented with little indentations in the side so your fingers can grip onto them more easily. The only thing is there would have to be right and left handed models. I would also like to see them with casings made out of soft touchable plastic. If they were dropped, they would be less likely to crack, and the soft plastic would cushion them more from the impact than the current more rigid plastic.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Electric Dragon - 07-08-2008 05:54 PM

Well, after having been kept waiting by Phones4u for 8 weeks for my Sony Ericsson V640 to be repaired and having to use a tacky Sagem as a loan phone, I gave it, demanded a refund and bought a secondhand Nokia 7610 - came with three MMC memory cards, charger, headset, data cable, three spare fascias (front, back and keypad) and a bluetooth adaptor all for £70!!

I swear whoever designed the keypad was on something - but it's suprisingly easy to use!!

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - Lestat - 07-08-2008 07:50 PM

Iphones are supposedly shite, my new one is a samsung, later model although not sure which one.

I need to get USB high speed internet though, currently I'm using my mobile as a modem too bloody slow by far.

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - FeelingArranger - 07-08-2008 08:34 PM

LOL, worth repeating.

I have a Virgin Mobile phone, and I mostly use it for pictures and Tetris, though the picture quality usually isn't too good. No, I don't use or want one.  (Call me a conspiracy nut but I've always hated the feeling I get when I'm close to one).  Perhaps I don't trust them... I don't know.

Both of my parents use them on a regular basis, but I refuse to buy one.   (Not that I'd need one anyway..)

RE: Mobile phones/cellphones - CSI-Fan3 - 07-17-2008 09:16 PM

I do have a cell phone, but only because my mom made me get one because my school's 7 kilometers away and I go on bike... But I don't really use it, unless I get a flat tire or something.
