I'm two grades ahead. Meaning I'm thirteen and I'm supposed to be in seventh grade (mid-high), but I'm in ninth grade (a freshman in high school). Most of the kids are OK with that. It's just that because I'm two grades ahead, still a 4.0 student, and happen to supposedly act/talk like an adult most of the time: the kids call me 'child prodigy' or 'genius'.
I guess most people would be 'proud' of that, but it troubles me a little. I've always tried to fit in and I've never really was forced into this type of situation before because I was homeschooled for six years until now.
I suppose it's not much of a problem, but it still irks me.

It's probably better than being stuck in classes that are frustratingly below your skill. Several of us have had that situation. Then the teacher gets upset when you stare out the window during the lessons and concludes you have bad behavior issues.

Ugh. You're so lucky. I could have been up at least two grades, but all the teachers were too dumb to realize such until it was too late.

I know this forum isn't for me (I'm too old), but in this case I'll bend the rules.
Like silky said I was in horribly easy classes during middle school. I very frustrated with the teachers; I always felt that they were talking down to me, like a dog. High school didn't seem like it would be much better. So my parent decided to do combination of home schooling and college courses. It's now three years later and I'm doing very well.

Does your school not have an honors program soyou can take higher than your grade lvl classes but be with students of your grade level but I think tha system only works one grade lvl up.

Hello Lady Calypso! I just barely exceed this forum's age limit (I'm 17) and though I'm a senior I qualify for early graduation so I kind of understand your dilemna. My school has honors and AP classes so look for those high schools tend to have loads of them. I also take classes online (many college have internet courses ^^) . I hope this info helps you. Also Lady like you I am a "child prodigy" and "genius" so teachers often use me as a teacher's aid to the special ed classes. I'm in one class that's way lower than my ability (here in WA we have wacky diasbility laws and we are required 50 hours woth of specialized instruction which transfers in my school to being stuck with a patronizing teacher, troublemakers, and kids below my level for one period a day) But the special ed class worked well for homework time and I made friends by doing nice things for my classmates such as writing clever poetry personalized for each kid. Also don't be afraid to branch out with people not of your IQ level, it's a lot more fun than being by yourself. I know some of my NT friends would kill to be you. Just look at the blessings and don't be afraid to use your lemons to squirt someone in the eye

I have a couple friends that are almost 3 years ahead! they're NTs, but theyt have some aspie traits. they are also sisters that seem to really get along. yes, they have a little trouble finding friends that will accept their childlike tendencies. but they've found some very open people (including me), that also tend to be a little childish. it has helped me find more friends, too. they are very free from ageism, as they have friends ranging from 9 to 20 years old. i'm only 6 months ahead! that doesn't even count anyway. it's just because many people have birthdays before January.
so yeah, just try to find other people who are a year ahead of themselves, or just those who aren't ageist. and yes, you should be proud of yourself too!

Apologies in advance if I am too old for this thread too,. but I was also a student who got very bored in some classes because of wanting to do more advanced work.
Being born early in the year (4th March) the rules could have been bent to let me start school a year earlier; but because I was small for my age and a bit emotionally immmature, it was decided to let me start with my age peers.
I soon started getting in trouble for being naughty because of being so bored and looking out the window. When we had a set reader that we were supposed to study for a whole term, I would read it in one night.
The teacher promised to give me harder books to read but this never eventuated in 1st or 2nd grade and by 3rd grade, I thought what's the point of trying my hardest so I just started coasting along with the minimum amount of effort it needed to get a B+ average.
The worst thing was being actively discouraged from excelling because it "might" upset the other students/workmates. What about how upset I felt when I was continually held back? I really wish there had been a gifted child programme back in those days.

I had a Spanish IV classmate who was a sophomore. Not sure where she picked up the extra two years, but it was nice being her project partner.

It's nice being late thirties. You are legal for everything except the draft. (They did extend the enlistment age to 42 though. What will they do next, put Be All You Can Be inserts in Social Security checks?)

My main problem is getting rid of the nickname 'our genius', 'child prodigy', etc. It annoys me slightly because I rarely can communicate with them on an equal level.

Been myself two grades ahead for ages (well, at the age 10-18), unfortunately I have to tell you - it's impossible to get rid of those nicknames. Why do the nicknames annoy you? I got quite OK with that prodigy image - well, many classmates treated me as a child, sometimes even inappropriate to my age (when I was 12 I was treated like I was 8-9...) but I was quite comfortable with those 1-2 persons who didn't care about my age and my maths skills. With those I could communicate relatively well (relatively of course....). Find those people who see you person "in front of your skills" and not other way around (but even from those you will occasionally get that "prodigy" remark). With them, you can communicate on equal level. Also go sometimes to watch who is learning two grades below you - you may find out it's not that bad....

In Australia, one of the criteria needed to pass on into the next grade is Interpersonal Development. I should have advanced two grades, too. Those teachers give me work that is way under my level. All they seem to care about is being social.

My teachers always seem to be too much on Social things too! I got a C in it and If I was in a school for aspies I suppose I would get B or A.

I instantly got all of them except the Paris one.. out of all my classmates, I can safely say none of them would understand these jokes. Anyways, back on topic, I've been called a prodigy as early as the 3rd grade. It usually varies, depending on my teacher. I haven't had an official diagnosis yet, but in the 5th grade my teacher would tell the class I had AS once I left the classroom.. Needless to say, since they all had the maturity of 5th graders, I was pretty much socially isolated that year because (don't read if bad language offends you) I was a "retard with *** Burgers".

I was two years ahead at junior school. I remember there being huge rows about it because it was felt by some that I would have been better off with my age group peers but the work in those groups was just sooooooo booooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg . I felt stunted until I reached 13 and went to a grammar school (in the UK, they're schools for the "top" 25% of kids). However, at junior school my socialising issues had been noticed (ie that I didn't play with anyone - I didn't want to! I wanted to make my own games and run around and jump down the stairs (my favourite thing!), but they thought I wasn't socialising with my class because of the age difference. I was perfectly happy!! Sad they didn't agree and eventually I was moved back down again.

"Child prodigy" and "genius" are preferable to some other things you could be called for having exceptional ability, though they are a little annoying/embarrassing. They could be calling you a computer, calculator, dictionary, robot or witch because of your skills (the witchcraft accusations came as a result of abnormal eye contact + people who believe the only way to score 100% in maths is to scan the teachers memory for answers or activate your x-ray vision). At least the first two are intended as compliments.
