oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 05:39 PM

Lately me and some of my real world friends have been playing oGame, which is sort of like an online version of the old Masters of Orion 4x gaming genre.

http://ogame.org/

In that kind of game you colonise worlds, build up the colony's infrastructures and manufacturing, research new technologies, build fleets and carve out your own little galactic empire by force or by trade, while hopefully managing diplomacy with friends and foe to keep yourself on top. At early stages things take place over matter of minutes but later on actions can take hours to execute so it doesn't tend to reward time spent sat at the keyboard grinding but rather long term decisive actions.

Given the nature of the game, I figured that it'd be a natural choice for folks on the spectrum seeing how it rewards tactical, patient, logical thinking over twitch reflexes and angry onslaughts like most online games.

Anyway, if any of you guys decide to try it out, sign up for Universe 22, which is where me and my friends play, and either send a mesage to Ryuujin or go to the "Alliance" page and send a request to join Pwn3d, or just post your galaxy/sector/planet in this thread, and we can hook up. (And I might be able to send some resources to kickstart your empire)

If enough people get intrested I think we should form an all-spectrum Alliance and show the Universe who owns their *** ^-^

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Crehl - 03-09-2007 06:38 PM

Screenshots looked good enough for me, signed up under 'Crehl' on universe 22. I've been playing a similar game (But text-based) recently, so hopefully I shouldn't have too much trouble starting up.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 06:54 PM

It seems very free, do you ever pay any money at all?

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 07:48 PM

Nope, completely free, couple of google ads on most their pages, but no popups or anything remotely intrusive.

People can pay for two "add on" things, Commander, which gives an improved interface but no actual advantage of note, and Officers - officers is a lot more controvertial in that it does give players a very small advantage (such as faster research or slightly higher production output), but the advantages are marginal in the long run and still give no advantage in combat situations which is where it really counts.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 07:50 PM

I posted a topic on the forum to see if we find any more that way:
http://board.ogame.org/thread.php?threadid=228593

Might be that we'll end up moving to another universe and starting over depending how many we get, which'll be fine really, start a fresh Aspie civilisation from the ground up ^-^

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 09:30 PM

Is this game complicated to learn? I am interested.

I suppose compared to most HTML based games it is kinda complex, but compared to the games like Master of Orion it draws from it's greatly simplified.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 09:57 PM

I just registered at universe 22 and have begun to build a solar plant.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 09:59 PM

Can't figure out how to build a shipyard Sad

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 10:05 PM

Check the material requirementson the building screen =p

A shipyard needs a small amount of Deuterium, which you don't have by default. I'd focus on getting your mines up for now so you can produce resources. You won't be able to afford ships anyway yet nor have the appropriate research to build anything but solar satellites. I'll send you some resources to help you get started, what's your username in ogame?

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 10:06 PM

Oh, sorry, the Shipyard needs access to at least a level 2 robotics factory anyway - if you look on the "Technology" screen it tells you what requirements you must meet to be able to produce or research specific projects.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:11 PM

My username is Kezzil and I am currently a n00b at this game, what I've experienced in other games is that it isn't smart to invest in n00bs because they will just spoil it anyway. I think I should just learn this game at start first.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 10:16 PM

Well, if you want - I think the start might be a bit discouragingly overkill on this game as you start off with enough materials to make a few mines and then you need wait a couple days before you have the materials to kick it up a gear, and it'd be a week or more before you can really start proper because they don't eve give you any deuterium (Which is probably the single most essential resource in the long run, and also hardest to make)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:22 PM

I have a deuterium plant, and it says I have income. However, I haven't received any deuterium yet so I focus my solar energy on metal production.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:25 PM

I've built another solar plant now so I don't have any energy problem.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:26 PM

I've received my first deuterium!

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:27 PM

Dammit, I should have invested more in metal production.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 10:35 PM

Yup, if you check under the Resources tab you can see your exact production rates and power usage. It pays to click "Calculate" as it often doesn't add your latest building into the equations (so it may say you don't have enough energy when if you recalculate it, you do)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:38 PM

The sad thing now is that I will have to wait about two hours before I will be able to build my next metal mine. I have yet to see any current use of "espionage" and other buttons I haven't clicked yet.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 10:40 PM

I am making an Excel file right now to help me, this is obsessing.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 11:27 PM

Lol, I knew you'd get into it XD...

Want me to send you some extra resources afterall once I get some fleet slots freed up? -
Those starting resources you get really are rediculously small, "500 metal and crystal" isn't even an amount you'd consider worth scraping off the hull of your recyclers in a weeks time.

(Unfortunatly that'll have to wait til tommorow, I accidentlly paralysed myself by assigning too many fleets on long-duration assignments so I can't send out any transports til some of my other ships get back from their asignments, the earliest isn't due until like 1.30am so I'll probably be in bed)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 11:34 PM

I have a use of metal to upgrade my metal production, I don't see any more use of crystals right now (I have about 360 crys and I am waiting unil I've got 90 metal which I have almost got now).

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 11:35 PM

Dammit, something useful costed real money - a geologist(10% extra mine production)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 11:47 PM

Now I am allied!

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 11:48 PM

... Or I have at least accepted some sort of request.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-09-2007 11:52 PM

Lol, did you actually buy the geologist upgrade, or just thinking about it?

If you did I'd be careful who you mention it to as a lot of players consider it cheating and delibratly target people who use the service and they want to have it banned. Besides you won't need it soon.

I think I saw some Excel sheets being offered for calculations on the main forum, yeah, here:
http://board.ogame.org/thread.php?threadid=226714

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-09-2007 11:56 PM

I am very sceptical to any type of subscribtion, haven't bought the Geologist.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-10-2007 12:00 AM

Yeah, most people are. When they suggested the subscription system there was a HUGE protest, lot of players quit and the forums are still abuzz with people who want the option removed. But, meh *shrugs* - it's all storm in a teacup.

If you click on my name in the buddy list, or the little "piece of paper" icon after my messages you can send messages in game. If you look on your overview screen it'll tell you if you have new messages waiting.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-10-2007 12:56 AM

Just to illustrate something for the new players:
The Overview page is your friend =p

New messages, incoming and outgoing ships, what's being built on what planet can all be found on there so check it regulary =p

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-10-2007 05:37 PM

Meh, the Moderators closed my topic aksing about Aspies who play OGame - apparently you are only allowed to ask that kind of thing on your alliance front page, however considering how few Aspies there are in the world the odds of one just chancing across the alliance page given there  over 1.5 MILLION potential colonies in OGame, and we are but a few people in that sea of worlds, I don't rate very highly... damn.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-10-2007 05:42 PM

The numbers I've heard suggests that there's alot of aspies in this world, about 1 in 166 might of the world's population. And many of these sit constantly infront of computers, I think many of the other alliances consist of a large portion of aspies.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-10-2007 06:23 PM

Well, I think we should split off the Alliance sooner rather than later. I'm thinking we should use the Alliance tag "Aspies", granted it's not particulary catchy like "AFF" and whatnot, but people on the spectrum will instantly recognise the term and maybe take a closer look at the alliance and potentially join us.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-10-2007 06:35 PM

Aspies for Deuterium

The Conquering Aspies

The Aspie Pirates

Or does it have to be a single word?

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-10-2007 06:53 PM

The tag is the single word that appears next to your name and stuff - like Pwn3d o nmy current alliance. So yeah needs to be one word and short.

Then you have a seperate Alliance Name which shows on the Alliance page itself. (Karnumian Empire in the case of our current alliance)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - DarkBlueCat - 03-16-2007 06:26 AM

So how many aspies are known to play ogame? If more people are coming, I think it might be a better idea to wait for the next(30th) universe to start and play there because everyone will start from nothing. It is impossible to register and become good at 22th universe right now because it's a very old universe. I played in 36th universe in Turkish ogame( http://www.ogame.com.tr ) for 2 months and i quit when I was ranked second. If many Aspies join, I might join 30th universe in 20 March(that's when it will go online). It will have x2 speed. I played in a x2 speed Turkish universe before, it made me very tired but it was more fun.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-16-2007 01:52 PM

The last 2 new universes on .org are so busy though people can't even have a full compliment of 9 planets because they're packed in like sardines - forget picking planets slots for size or quality, people just have to grab what they can XD. Uni 30 will go the same way.

At any rate it's just us 3 from AFF. I posted a topic asking on the forums but the moderator closed it and told me if I wanted to form an all Aspie alliance I'd have to advertise on just a single universe's Alliance Advertising page - and you KNOW how tiny the chances of anyone seeing us there is.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - DarkBlueCat - 03-17-2007 04:47 AM

They closed it probably because they thought it was an alliance introduction topic. I created another one without mentioning alliances.
http://board.ogame.org/thread.php?threadid=231140
By the way if any Aspies are thinking about starting ogame, I suggest starting now in an old universe to learn the basics before playing in a new universe seriously.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-17-2007 10:29 PM

Well you've had a heck of a lot more luck than me so far finding people =p

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-17-2007 10:36 PM

Do I still have possibility of joining in somewhere? (Kezzil)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-17-2007 11:45 PM

I think the master plan is we'll all start over in Universe 30 once it's up and running and form a large alliance there, we already have like 7 or 8 people intrested now.

In the meantime, it;d be a good idea to cut your teeth in Universe 22

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ivar T - 03-17-2007 11:50 PM

*wonder what "cut your theeth" could mean*

Guess that mean I should try experience the game?

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - DarkBlueCat - 03-18-2007 12:47 AM

Yes the more experience you get in 22th universe, the better you'll do in 30th universe. I have exams in the university 10 days after 30th universe opens. But if many aspies come I'll join anyway, although I can't spend too much time for the game as I used to. It will be x2 speed universe so it will require too much time. By the way what's your rank in established universes generally Ryuujin? If many aspies join and we decide to start 30th universe, I may translate a very long guide I wrote for a Turkish website. It covers everything in the first month of the universes. I had 1st rank in 2 Turkish universes but I have never played in http://www.ogame.org .I only played a week in 14th universe when it was new. That's one of the reasons why I want to play in http://www.ogame.org ,it will be a good change Smile

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-18-2007 01:27 AM

I only started playing just over 2 weeks ago with some of my friends. I'm currently ranked 1.464 of 2.843 with 4,112 points. It should be pointed out I've been actively avoiding letting my score go up too fast, didn't fancy getting beaten up prematurely. (Plus I'm abandoning the last of my kickstart planets tommorow as my first 4 permanent colonies have settled down now so I'm working on their defences and organisation, then beginning a new wave of expansion once I'm done there)

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Ryuujin - 03-18-2007 01:29 AM

For practical purposes, I've already got Ion Cannons, Impulse Mk 5 power Small Cargo fleet big enough to res save properly, Large Shield generators on all my worlds, reasonable espionage etc =p

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - Georgije - 03-19-2007 10:49 PM

if you want you can register in universe 21, that's where i mostly play =>543.542 (Rank 51 of 2.606)

i can give you lots of free resources and playing advice if you need it Wink

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - - 03-28-2009 09:59 PM

I'm playing in universe 21 - find me at 1:435.

ranked 500 and something.

Okay. I've just started in universe 21. Just sorta feeling my way around at the moment. I have of course massive experience with these sorts of games.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - ZodRau - 05-01-2009 08:55 PM

After a month of obsessing on the game, I have my first nanite factory, my rank has shot from 1600 to 595, and I'm going into v-mode for a few days.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - - 09-09-2009 01:30 AM

well, bored now. rank 200-something, untouchable defences....bored.

RE: oGame (Online Master of Orion/4x clone) - ZodRau - 09-09-2009 02:53 AM

Yeah. Me too. Haven't played it in a few months. Now I play Eve Online. It's not free, but it does prove the saying, "You get what you pay for."
