Yes, well I thought this woman on the bus WAS trying to draw attention to herself. I eventually put my hands over my ears because between her and the crackling of the two-way on the bus, it was driving me spare!

A man who I have had some chats with on the bus looked a bit worried and told me I should "take care".

It's not a matter of using slang - I speak a lot of slang in real life but I don't speak loudly and raucously. For some odd reason, the chav men don't usually have such unpleasant voices as such but they are usually way too loud as well.

The people being described here actually deserve to be locked up - being "made fun of" is a rather light punishment compared to what they deserve. Personally, i'm actually proud to be prejudiced against criminal behaviour. I don't care about mere difference, I do care about this particular difference.

It's behaviour that matters, chavs are a group defined by behaviours and not appearance - they do share a lot in common appearance-wise, but it's the behaviour that matters not the style of dress.

More than half of the "jokes" on this thread are related to the stereotypical looks of "chavs."  Hence, I would disagree that they are a group defined entirely by behaviors, not appearance.  The photo of the man missing a tooth has nothing to do with his style of dress, either.

How do you identify them by behavior alone?  If that were the case, they'd simply be criminals, no stereotypical name needed.

err, no - chavs do have a certain style/apperance, but that is not why they are objects of scorn. I don't care if someone happens to look like a chav (other than perhaps thinking they have poor taste in clothing, but their choice), I do care if someone actually is one.

A group of people known for being abusive and violent deserve hatred. I can also understand precisely why they are this way (multiple reasons, the "oh no, difference" effect, simple immaturity, enjoyment (i.e they enjoy abusing others), material gain (in the case of theft), trying to make their mark and assert themselves (hence graffiti and trying to put down others), multiple reasons....).

None of these reasons excuse the behaviour though, and it is quite appropriate to hate people for this.

Well, if you want to defend a group which has caused a lot of direct suffering, don't be surprised if you find disagreement.

As I said, at least for myself i'm proud to be prejudiced against criminals - hating people like this is something that any decent human being should be "guilty" of. It is absolutely foolish to defend a particular group against all criticism merely because "they're different, just like us" when the differences are the reasons for the criticism.

A real Chav - takes great pride and gratification on inflicting serious harm on other people. There victems are usally weaker than them. Impulsive and manipulative, impulsive in the sence that one might think '' lets go nick that ford focus '' with totall disrigard for the consiquences. Manipulative in the sence that one might come up to you in the street asking to '' lend a quid '' and then use emotional blackmail if told no, An example of this would be '' aw come on 'mate' my little brothers been sleeping in the park all night and we need to get him home '' (quoted from one encountor) they usally like to listen to mc'ing ( alot of disjointed beats with and mc 'singing' over the music intersperced with snipets of old happy hardcore ) this music usally gloryfies defing the rules and laws of society. I remember one such example with lirics that went like this '' drugs dont kill people, rappers do, and i'm a rapper and I might kill you '' They like to where big coats with the userall trends such as Henry loyd and Fred perry. This gives them a sence of belonging and also a sence of emporerment as they feel like a part of a special group where the rules don't apply to them. Now I will go onto the ' tag along chav ' these children/teenagers ( I must emphasise children and teenagers as this is more of a trend in these cases) usally have a brother or relative who is a clasic Chav. These ' tag along chavs ' are usally in ore of there more clasic chav counterparts, and thus will usally get involved in petty crime. They feel they have a sence of connection of this ' special group ' and a sence of protection. Unfortunatley there (usally older) classic ( anti-sosial personality orientated ) Chavs will use these ' tag alongs ' to push drugs and weapons, usally in the form of a ' run ' which involves carrying the offending item from A to B. This is not the case for all as many will be content on the occasional underage drinking binges, drug use, and most importantly 'smokeing behind the school bike sheds*.' I will now use ' * ' as a model of reflection between the classic chav and the tag along chav. The classic chav feels a sence of empowerment by defying the rules by smokeing behind that bike shed, the tag along chave will usally feel a sence of freedom and maturity by doing this, and thus you have the corrolation between the too. The tag along chav usally develops into a normal adult male or female, that is if they havent become addicted to drugs. They are usally found in lower class working employment due to them focussing more on social issues during there teenage years than on study. On an end note the Chav era can be regarded as a futuristick version of the 70's punks. ( Bows and goes of stage )

As far as I am concerned this posting just proves my point and to be honest i am worn out with trying to point this out to people, with luck the media and their 'sheep' will find a new stereotype to label a new group of people with and we can all forget this sad episdode and move on!

Education of the "it's ok to be black or gay" variety is not enough to tackle prejudice sadly. What i've noticed is that people who are prejudiced against a minority can fall into 3 categories:
1 - mild background discomfort - nearly unconcious, I would not be surprised if I myself had this kind about some minorities (though I hope I don't), this is one which can be fixed by exposure in most cases
2 - conciously aware of "the other" being in some way bad, this one can't be fixed by mere exposure but a combination of exposure and education might fix a lot of cases
3 - white supremacist type - sadly, in most cases you can simply forget it, by this point it's gotten to the level of a religious belief

So lets call every one another offensive name and keep at it no matter what, showing our ignorance and making ourselves look stupid, uising a word in a racialy offensive way and then talking about educating people regarding bigotry. This thread is so mixed up its unreal!

Yeah it does.  You will find shallow behavior amongst all classes in Capitalism.  I am a real Chavo a Romani(gypsy) of Hungarian/Yugoslav descent.  The word chav comes from chavo which means boy in Romanes.

Britain is less racist than France or Italy from what I know, in France they also torture Autistic people.  Even if you are white or part of the dominant ethnicity of the country I feel like racism is a great danger to all Autistic people.  It breeds a society of intolerance and basically anti diversity.  I read something that said more people diagnosed with Autistic conditions are middle/upper class.  That makes sense, middle class values put a big emphasis on conformity, you are also expected to do well in school and in the social circles of your class background.  When a kid from that kind of background doesn't its like omg we need to give that kid a label.  When someone froma  working poor background or from an oppressed ethnicity isn't excelling within the status quo nobodies particularly surprised, they already have a label.

We aren't ridiculouling the welfare class. We're ridiculing chavs. Chavs are violent, irrational, brainless, and utterly worthless creatures, most of whom belong to the welfare class. Not everyone who belongs to the lower or welfare class is a chav. I would never ridicule those who aren't.

Although I personally dislike the whole idea of the class system (I would not quite fit into any class personally), I have to agree with this. An old friend of mine's entire family could be called working/welfare class but they're good people - they don't go around committing random acts of violence and abuse and if they did i'd want nothing to do with them.

It's not what "class" someone is that matters, it's their behaviour. The fact that sadly the kind of violent lowlife behaviour people are complaining about in this thread is statistically more common in the unemployed and working class is a tragic fact of life.

It's quite different to racism. Being an indiscriminately violent criminal is a behaviour for which one deserves to be loathed, pilloried and ostracized.
