So I caught the premiere of this new show, "Mike & Molly." I gave it a chance because it was from the producer of "The Big Bang Theory" and its two protagonists were, um, people of size.

I was expecting this show to be about a couple of positive, complex characters who, although obese, had a lot of possible story options aside from the obvious. There needs to be a work of fiction where overweight characters just... live their lives the best they can, without the overused and cringe-inducing plotlines dealing with diet and exercise, or lack thereof.

Of course, I couldn't have been more wrong with my progressive assumption about this show. It must have fallen back on every tired old "fat people" stereotype in the book, and some of the jokes were just plain offensive and inappropriate. It was reminiscent of those lower-than-lowbrow, merit-less sitcoms that the Fox network used to have in the days before "The Simpsons."

The only halfway amusing character was the sarcastic Senegalese waiter. If the story focused on him, then the show could have been a lot more interesting...
