Did the mass murderer have Asperger's?

RE: VA Tech Shooting - skyblue1 - 03-10-2010 10:14 PM

you could google that news story to find out,I guess

RE: VA Tech Shooting - Ruby2010 - 03-11-2010 10:09 AM

I don't remember hearing anything about that when it happened.  I can find speculation on the internet but it is all he said/she said garbage.

Apparently I can't edit my post anymore.

I am still researching, it looks like a lot of people suspect, but I have yet to find any kind of evidence that convinces me.  Nothing I have read so far couldn't be attributed to another condition equally likely and as far as we know he was never evaluated.  I try to avoid researching school shooters, particularly this one as when it happened I was so disturbed I couldn't function, but I am too curious to stay away so I will keep looking for a while.

You've got a five minute window after each post, then it's locked in and only moderator and upwards can edit (though we can edit anyones posts, so if you miss something and you only notice after your window expires, report the post and request help).

On topic - no, no evidence was ever found that he was an aspie - "merely" bullied past the breaking point.

They suspect he was autistic... If you research it although I dont know how reliable the sources are. Thank god that the media didnt over hype that or we would be even more misjudged.

Nobody reputable claimed he was autistic, just the usual suspects.

"they" suspect?

the only person I see putting that out there is you...

now we can google///this subject and the only hits will be on aff.

RE: VA Tech Shooting - HOFJanitor - 03-12-2010 12:03 AM

I am not claiming he was autistic. Although according to his parents he was and had many of the characteristics. The main reason of this thread is to point out that as part of the autistic community many people are unaware as to the possibility that Cho was an autistic. JUST BE THANKFUL THAT THE MEDIA DID NOT OVER HYPE THE POSSIBILITY OR PEOPLES PERCEPTIONS WOULD BE QUITE WORSE.

RE: VA Tech Shooting - skyblue1 - 03-12-2010 12:23 AM

socio's and aspies do share some traits

RE: VA Tech Shooting - mysterywalker - 03-12-2010 02:39 AM

I wouldn't call it an impossibility, but I'm not sure it's really a relevant point to worry about either.

RE: VA Tech Shooting - nialll - 03-12-2010 02:48 AM

i've heard he might have been, too. but still. i hope most people wouldn't be so stupid as to judge an entire group of people based on one particular person.

RE: VA Tech Shooting - mysterywalker - 03-12-2010 03:16 AM

I've found that whenever you feel the urge to say, "I hope most people wouldn't be so stupid as to..."

The odds are pretty good that whatever you say to complete that sentence will be a perfect description of exactly what most people will do.

However in this case I think most people have just forgotten the whole thing.

RE: VA Tech Shooting - HOFJanitor - 03-21-2010 11:05 PM

For once the media got it right by not overplaying the Virgina Tech Autistic mass murderer possibility...he definitely exhibited Aspie/Autistic traits and Praise the Lord the media spared us.

RE: VA Tech Shooting - raew - 03-22-2010 05:29 AM

Okay, I researched it, too. All I see as their basis for claiming he was Autistic was that he didn't talk. I teach adult Chinese students to speak English. It is rare that my students speak to other students when they first come to the class, even if they learned some English in China. Anyone that knows anything about teaching Chinese students knows that in China it is frowned upon to speak up in class. You do NOT ask questions of the teacher in front of classmates, for instance, because it is seen as disrespectful (the teacher would lose face). You would go to the teacher after class, in private. You would not feel comfortable around a bunch of loud Americans yacking about in English such as in High School- AND in China I understand that you are not considered an adult and do not go to college usually until around age twenty-one. You are not expected to mature as fast. Imagine being Cho in an American high school? Alone. A boy, not seen as mature, and not able to converse well? So then they call him Autistic? A lot of young people snap after being bullied for years. That doesn't make them Autistic. It makes the people that bullied him the murderers, the way I see it.

I couldn't agree more, they were too busy wanting to blame someone, instead of thinking first and considering cultural differences.

Actually -- and my profession for the last 17 years in the army has been Korean linguist, btw -- actually, now that I think about it many of the stereotypical characteristics of Koreans could come across as "autistic" to westerners.  Might help explain why I've always fit in so well over there...
