I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Chase Asay - 02-10-2010 03:46 AM

I'm tired of hearing all this talent go to waste. You people ..ALL PEOPLE have the ability to show there talents. Get your anti-socialself out there and do something you thought you could never do! I never used to write before and now I write books, manga, plays, poems, songs, etc.

Anyone can sing. Stage fright is what is blocking you from being an actor/singer. Why let it control you!? BREAK FREE! Get that thing in your mind that says "Well if I do this...." and "Well if this happens...." out of your mind! Who's with me? I don't think you have to be smart to sing or write a catchy song. DO IT! Not hard. Trust me. I don't think I am the only Aspie that can over come it.

Thank you for commenting. The struggle we have isn't caused by others... it is ourselves.

You reminded me that I saw a license plate yesterday that read "UR GFTD". I thought that was awesome! Someone meant that message for every single person that read it. Cool.

But singing in tune is a rarer gift. =)

But yes, try painting or turning cartwheels or roller dancing (but not in the middle of a busy street, I've seen that attempted and they were lucky the bus had emergency brakes), fight dragons; it might just be fun.

I used to write songs, but got intimidated by other musicians because I really did have more ambition than ability in that area.
I have, however, been exploring any other latent talents I may possess, trying to slow down my thoughts and convert them into something creative, such as stories. They are only for myself for now, but if ever I do make something that I feel has some merit to others, I'll try to share it. It really is an interesting challenge - trying to match the vague impressions and feelings in my head with words, one that I am far from mastering, but a satisfying one when I can tune out distractions.
You seem very creatively driven, Chase, and I really admire that. I think I know that kind of feeling, but it comes in phases for me and often turns rancid while I'm still halfway through the creating.

I know you mean well, but there is a bit of generalization in here! I'd never fold.

Chase, I deliver anything up to 40 mins of performance poetry, I can do you a stunning storytelling/acting rendition of the whole of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas.  I deliver drama and creative workshops to schools and community groups.  I draw pencil portraits, and sometimes sell them...  I sing for my own amusement, I even sometimes sing at work, even though I know people will think I'm a bit odd.  I don't sing on stage because I can't carry a tune, and because I'm as deeply phobic of it as I am of spiders...and see no particular benefit in tackling either.  Even though some...[no, right, you must have posted this before my response to another thread of yours, so I won't be rude yet]...suggests I should.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Genesis - 02-10-2010 05:46 PM

There is some stuff I can do, when its organized, I can paint, and make YouTube Videos... yet somehow I'm afraid of some of my own material...

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - TheRainGirl - 02-10-2010 06:26 PM

Eek! Yeah I'm a rather talented imaginative writer. But when I write it seems to overwhelm the person it is intended for. I often use that method if I want to prove how much somebody means to me, rather than the plain method of just telling them. (which doesn't mean much nowadays). So I hold back because I unintentionally overwhelm.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Saft - 02-10-2010 06:27 PM

I agree with you with some of the things that you have said OP.  No one should allow themselves to be held back from something that they can and love to do.

However, I am always held back by feeling afraid.  That I can not do it..I become very anxious and intimidated that over rules everything else.

Is that a bad thing to "attention ***"?

What is wrong with it?

I remember when I used to carry a portable
amplifier and speaker with microphone and
that was my "attention ***" when I needed
help, or any kind of attention.

{Over PA SPEAKER} "Attention please, I need assistance."

Is this kind of thread banned here? If so I

I think that would get their attention when they are always trying to ignore you. I just about have to yell to others to get attention or they conveniently ignore me.Smile

This thread is about what I did in so little time. You all can do the same! THESE ARE JUST EXAMPLES! Sheesh. Everyone has natural talent. If you can tie knots....then tie them more beautifully then ever before. If you can whistle, take it to the EXTREME! I don't know or care how YOU become successful, I just want the feeling that you all have thought about it. .....which you did if you read before posting.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Chase Asay - 02-11-2010 01:07 AM

If you do these things on a regular basis, it will become a habit and destroy your fear. Trust me. I work for charities (I'm into humanitarianism), because of my speeches and events I host. Yeah....and I'm only 15. You guys should totally be able to do better, if you are older. OH. Sorry I couldn't answer your posts. I kinda go to school! And for all those who hate this idea.....why?

Hmmmmmm ... Like you Saft,  I think a lot of us here hold back ... mainly because we have AS which, by its very definition, is a social communication disorder ... so we're probably not the toe-tapping, all-singing-all-dancing, confident types.

Which leads me to think, Chase Asay, do you understand what Asperger's Syndrome is?

BardWolf Wrote:

Me too, because the author doesn't seem to understand AS.

Not necessarily.  It takes a long time to dispel the fear and most of the time fear wins.  Confidence is not great at all..and it is much more relaxing and reassuring to stick with the same routine.
If you do work for charities then that is good that you do that but don't try to ''force'' people to feel that they have to go all out, there are a lot of problems that one has to ''face'' before generally being able to dispel the fear and succeed.

i agree with you up to a point. it's true, the first time usually is by far the scariest. and if it goes wrong it could make one just give up. and for some that barrier is very difficult to overcome (perhaps more so for someone with AS, especially regarding things in public), and probably takes a great deal of motivation. risks aren't always worth taking.

i only started performing because i wanted attention. i was nobody and i desperately wanted to be somebody. luckily for me the feedback to the first time i played in front of strangers was very good, but if it hadn't been good, i would probably would have never shown my face in school ever again.

and it's not just about the first time, it's always about other things too. putting yourself out there brings you in line with others' critique, and some people love to bash people just because they are putting themselves out there. and that possibility is always there.

but more so, confidence can be very fragile. my confidence with performing and writing has not just gone up and up every time i've played/written a new song, it's been very up and down. even when you're on that track where you feel you can do this, the smallest thing can knock you off again. i've lost confidence in my musical abilities more times than i can remember. and that makes life more difficult in some ways than if i were not doing it. so it's not as simple as things being easy once you;ve done it a few times. sometimes it's harder to keep going.

i'm not gonna say that the things i mentioned would put me off, but there's nothing wrong with someone being put off by their fear, if that is their choice and they are ok with it.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - mom4nell - 02-11-2010 10:32 PM

The posts about confidence reminds me of something a friend told me.  He had many occupations including working backstage crew jobs at concerts in the 1950's and 1960's.

One of the biggest stars of that era was Sammy Davis, Jr.  He came off stage after one performance and asked my friend (who he had never met) how he did, did he do okay, did he think the audience really liked him, etc.  So even respected, revered professionals often lack confidence.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Chase Asay - 02-12-2010 12:36 AM

Not knowing what Asperger's syndrome is? I had it for quite sometime...since I was born. And when you bring up the fact of understanding the disorder, it seems to me that you are using the definition as an excuse. I do not consider myself a steriotypical Aspie. And for God sake! This IS an attention whoring thread. I want you people to know that being sociable isnt just for NTs or people like me (who have it but dont need an excuse).

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - scandy007 - 02-12-2010 12:38 AM

my confidence has been very upsy-downsy for a long time; i definitely excel quickly in music and grammar and language...,writing, drawing, and making creative inventions for my personal usage. (such as a stationary bike or etc.) yet the math field has been the big "what if?" for quite a while now. i've been so immersed nowadays in languages, writing, and music and drawing in high detail that i have forgotten to (atleast) persist in math! and this has been going on for several years.

THAT'S JUST IT! People who want to leave a conversation or just want to "hide" from sociability AREN'T going to be okay! Think about it. If you wanted .....an ice cream cone and you were to afraid to talk to the server and ended up leaving the store, would you still feel wanting for your ice cream cone?

That isn't bad. You are leaning to your favored subjects. What I do not like is when people use the very definition of AS or Autism as an excuse for themselves. I read the very meaning myself and I actually have AS! I read "Lack of social communication skills" and ......doesn't that make it obvious? If I "lack" in any area, I need to fix it. Some people just need to fix it.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - micgrace - 02-12-2010 12:52 AM

Social Anxiety. Its a recognised problem not just unique to aspies. Ordering something to eat is quite different to holding a pointless small talk conversation with heaps of innuendo, double meanings, sexually charged meanings from body language etc with someone of the opposite sex who is a strong NT type person.

Hmph. I know why I lost your respect. BECAUSE OF ADULTS REACTIONS TO THE NUMBER OF TIMES I'VE BEEN AROUND THE SUN!! ....ehem. Seriously, adults don't understand that you were once like me. Age is but a number. I don't care how old you are. If you have wisdom to give, I'm fine.

Strange really. I try to help, and yet....adults put me down....isn't it the other way around?

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Chase Asay - 02-12-2010 01:20 AM

The part that "over throws" me is that people think they can't fix things. Think about these:

"Lack of commication skills." OH MY GOD! Screw my life. How will I ever be able to fix it? I guess I'm doomed.

"Extreme depression and sadness." Oh no! Does this mean I'll commit suicide....or maybe homicide!? Oh......I don't know what to do.

"Average or above average intelligence." Woot! I guess I'm better than everyone else. I guess this compensates for the above symptoms!

Eh. All wrong.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Alison - 02-12-2010 01:40 AM

Hi Chase Asay.  I'm all for the ideal, but the reality is far harder to achieve.  For instance, apart from the preschool-teaching portion of my career I am also a published and award-winning writer.  I have also worked at a variety of jobs during my 50 times around the sun, including doing contract conveyancing (to ensure that all houses/units/residences are of a habitable and safe standard before their purchase) for a team of lawyers.

You need to find out what you're good at and then (and this is the difficult part) work so hard at it, get so good at it, and convince the employers of all the above, and that you're also a "team player", a "people person" and a inanely-smiling little NT before all that hard work will eventually be rewarded.  Interestingly enough, in all the job interviews I've attended, even in the ones where I've scored the job, my well-above-average IQ never entered into the equation.

I'm not saying don't do it.  By all means, go for it, in my own small way I've proved that it can be done.  But don't expect that it's all going to drop into your lap.  I've been pushing a stone ten times my weight uphill for so long, as well as fighting a rearguard battle from NTs behind me, that it now feels like second nature, but it's never easy.

I love your enthusiasm and your encouragement to other Aspies.  Now temper that with a few more turns around the sun, and you'll be a force to be reckoned with!

Alison (the only one in my preschool who can hold a tune and knows all the Wiggles songs)

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - Chase Asay - 02-12-2010 01:48 AM

For you people who hate me ...for whatever reason, I must admit that I do make very controversial topics to post about.

First of all, it's my style. Secondly, I want you people to think more. Thirdly, I would rather have intelligent people doing intelligent things, not screwing up on making decisions.

Three main themes in this thread: making excuses based on other's description, feeling as if you have talent, AND the feeling of being secure by having fear to do things (WHICH IS 100% WRONG)

Read the entire post to see what I answered to every person, who challenged my idea. thank you.

RE: I'm tired of you guys folding back! Let yourselves be known! - scandy007 - 02-12-2010 01:53 AM

but first, just remember that the symptoms you read about asperger's syndrome do not have to literally apply. you have asperger's syndrome- but that does not mean that some of the symptoms have to literally apply. that may sound kind of odd- what i'm saying is that the negative things do not count.
in conclusion, YES, a person may tell themself they have asperger's, but the "lack of communication skills/low sociability" part does not count, because they are born with it. if you're on the same boat as I, you'd see that these unique traits we have do not NEED to compensate for anything, they are just there, which makes us the way we are.

Ahhhhhhh. The age difference.

You people means AFF users.

I'm not talking down to you! Trust me. This is my form of motivation.

THINK OF ME AS A PERSON. Not an age difference. I rather have the feeling of youth...as a good thing.

I had all these. I used to have horrible spelling. I used to have violent moments. Sometimes growing up, I would have several thoughts of running away from home and suicide. I was afraid of speach towards other people....even my own family. Trust me. I don't want people to think they are stuck because they are too stubborn to think about what I am saying. I believe there are a few people holding back from what I am saying (they want to talk to me more...maybe not in a good way).

calling us "you people" is definitely not cool

Ahhhhhhh. The age difference.

You people means AFF users.

I'm not talking down to you! Trust me. This is my form of motivation.

THINK OF ME AS A PERSON. Not an age difference. I rather have the feeling of youth...as a good thing.

Sorry, it is hard to ignore the truth, you may have on blinders, but I dont. And yes you are a teenager, and you have been talking down to us.

I am beginning to understand your mother`s boyfriend`s frustration.

You want to know...don't you? FINE! I'll make my point using symbolism! If you think I am truly talking down to you, then consider this! I'm talking "down" to you guys because you have not yet left the surface of your abilities! Think of it as....a flower germinating from it's dark soil. I know people don't like change. Some change is good.

Mmm, snow sounds nice!  Here in Australia, it's uncomfortably hot and we have the air conditioner (solar powered, of course!) running all day and most of the night.  The sun is belting down outside at the moment, as usual blithely ignoring the optimistic weather report of light rain, so I have all the block-out blinds in my house drawn tight to limit my photophobic response.  Yuck, I hate summer!

I think your perspective, would be good for work on cartoons. I mean, I hope you don't think I'm saying your childish. What I'm trying to say, is because you still have the ability to view things from a child's point of view, you'd be good at helping to create cartoons that help explain things to children in a way that may help them understand more. Or perhaps just a cartoon where you're being plain silly, it would be great in helping kids feel they are understood.

To be honest, I've wanted to get into doing voice work for cartoons, but the major studios are either in Florida or California, and I would hate to move or leave my family. I really don't desire the stress of having a job. I'm fine helping out the guildies I have on Hello Kitty Online, and helping kids on the net in general. I was thinking of looking into some kind of class involving computers at community college in the spring.

Skyblue1. Seriously!?

You need to make me feel bad about every post I make?
What are you trying to prove?
Are you trying to say people don't need help and are perfect?
Do you want me to regret joining AFF?
If you are such an activist, how come you don't like my idea of helping people?
Don't you think motivators (I'm trying to be one) all are nice and treat you like they are inferior to you?
You said this is for "emotional development"....how are you helping?
Why do you follow my posts, if you hate me so much?

I think I know why you hate my way of putting things. You know what they say. "The human skull is hard to break through." Consider me the hammer and my ideas the nails. Don't I have to apply great force to penetrate the skull? Sorry for such a gross way of putting it.

It is based in a seperate world. It is kind of strange, because it has advanced technology and primitive weapons/religion.

It starts off from the main protagonist being born after a war was over(he has a sister but she has her own story). He lost his mother and his father. The first few chapters are about his childhood. When he finds out all about this war, he is determined to find his lost family (dad is alive, mom is dead after he meets her). He is incredibly sad and meets with an Alchemist found in a very rural area on the outskirts of town (she was "banished" for misusing her powers). He demands her to raise his mother from the dead and make her herself again. The Alchemist says no. At night, he steals the Alchemist's book (the book has a very serious name) and runs to the cemetary to revive her. He draws an alchemy circle in the dirt of her grave and resites the incantation. She does awaken, but she has turned into a monster. The boy notices his arm is paralized and has a very weird phrase on it (which he can not read). His former mother runs into the night and he is crying (his sister doesn't notice until the next chapter or so.

Can we talk on facebook?

Its ok, I don't take "childish" as a insult like some might,
in fact, "Normal" and "Mature" do not exist in my world,
only in vocab for refrence points.

Yes, I do voices and I think I could do voices for cartoons,
as cartoons are 85% of what I watch including CGI
as well as cel drawings, old and new.

I am in fact, stuck at 7 years old, I don't know if it is
because of the heat stroke I had when I was 15, or
because I might have autism, I don't know, still
a mystery to me.

But yes, for just knowing me on a message board
I'm surprised that someone could pick out that
about me but then again I guess I show it alot.

I make my own material, just have a look at
http://www.kittypuss.org and look for Felitron and Electrocat
it is work that my brother and me do together, my
brother writes most of the scripts and I do almost
all of the voices and the audio mixing.
Caution: They are rated MA-17 (US rating)
for violence.

I have not made any money on it, but it shows
how I feel about Cats and how sacred they are
to me, and when I hear something on the news
about Feline Cruelty I want to do the same to
the dirty human that they did to the poor kittypuss.

I rage when someone hurts a cat, but I am able
to deal with it by making these audio shows,
otherwise I would rage on and on and never
heal.

I don't get a sense that anyone here hates you for your age, at all. I think you want to charge ahead and do great things. You want to inspire people. Some advice, since I am the Queen of Unsolicited Advice (recognized in no country whatsoeverBig Grin), along with saying what you want to achieve and what you want others to achieve, remember to live your life with as many good choices as possible. Good, you say? I mean, sacrifices for others, for the common good. Open doors, smile, ask if you can help (ask first ha!), bite your tongue on the small things that get under your skin, leave a note for someone that needs it. A life well lived is not always about doing great things. It is often about doing small things well.

Hi Chase.  If you want a full rundown of my published work, the best way is just to Google my full name: Alison Venugoban.

Last time I looked, I had something like 19 pages worth to my credit, although some were doubles, but they also missed some of my stories that have been translated into other languages: My name looks interesting in Mandarin, I can tell you!

Also, my last name is pretty common in India, so if you just Google Venugoban you'll end up with a number of people that have no relation to me.  So probably best to type the whole name in.

I very much understand! I can easily let you be, no harm done, but just fyi, there is a 16 and under forum. That might make it more clear that you only intend to speak with kids. A lot of adults will post under this forum "treatment and society". Good luck in whatever you are trying to accomplish- and no, that was not a smart remark. I meant it honestly. In spite of your perception that all adults are in your way, there are many adults here that have no intention of putting you down or belittling you. That said, I'll leave you to your own devices.

if you are confident (either aspie or nt )and your friends arent - help them be more sure of themselves.
