Hi everyone, my son only got his diagnosis 3 days ago after 3 years of waiting. We knew from nursery he was different but it only really showed in primary. We still have difficulty with him on a daily basis. He gets really frustrated and hits his head off walls and has threatened to harm himself on numerous occasions. At the moment we really need to find some groups for him to let of some steam. He did go to Judo for a couple of months but the instructor couldnt handle him so asked him to leave. He is only 9 a rejection of this would have been so hard on him so we told him we didnt have the money for the lessons instead and he still asks if he can go back. He was doing really well in it and had gained his yellow belt and was heading for his green. I would just like some help in trying to control his upsetting behaviour (banging head on walls) as his sister is only 3 and has started to copy this behaviour. Any suggestions or help would be gratefully accepted. He is and individual and loving boy and we wouldnt change him for the world (just pad our walls ha ha).
Thanks
Hi there,
Judo sounds like an excellent sport for him if he enjoys it. Perhaps a different Judo school with a more sympathetic instructor. I find it incredible that a Judo instructor can't cope with a 9 year old and this smacks of disability discrimination to me. The fact that your son has successfully gone through a few gradings indicates that he can't be being unreasonably disruptive.

What if you scheduled a private meeting with the judo teacher and explained the situation? Maybe the instructor could recommend someone (maybe an older boy) who could do some one-on-one training with your son for a while. Maybe in a smaller setting like this he would do better and the instructor could be more understanding with knowledge of what makes your son "tick."
