If you had asked me in 1987 if I thought we'd still have a volunteer army through 2007, I would have said, please God, let it be.
But then I underestimated the political opposition to the U.S. draft. That is another unfortunate legacy of Vietnam. We have a war on terrorism, we are short on troops, if I was Bush on 9/11 I would have suggested a draft, but we can't have one. Whether or not it is to save Jenna and Barbara Bush, I don't know.
I hope if I married a non-citizen, no one would make a shot at me, and they probably wouldn't, I am not a criminal or a terrorist. Maybe they would, but I hope not.
I'm Dutch, and how people react to my husband and I sometimes depends on where they think I'm from. Some people think I'm Eastern European and get the "mail order bride" idea, whereas people that guess correctly that I'm Western European usually don't see our relationship as any different from an American-American relationship. Still, even when people think I'm Eastern European I think the attitude is still better towards us than towards white men marrying Asian women, however dumb that is. So anyway, whether you marry a foreigner or not doesn't necessarily matter in other people's eyes, depending on where she's from.

Off topic, but...
Did you ever see the movie My Fellow Americans? There's a line where the president tells his secretary to remind the VP that the Dutch are from The Netherlands and not the "Nether Regions."
