I know this was brought up a few months ago but I was wondering if anyone had any new insight on taking fish oil? A few had mentioned they were already or were going to take a supplement. Did anyone see results? Any particular brands that you would recommend?
:$ Mmm... I can't decide if you're making fun of me or not.

I know it sounds silly but someone recommended it today to me for autism; not as a cure, but to relieve stress.
Smile Thanks everyone! I've got some shopping to do. I especially like the idea about pumpkin seed oil.
Fish oil is superior to plant oils that only provide alpha-linolenic acid. This is because fish oil provides EPA and DHA, which are the Omega-3 fatty acids that your body actually needs. Your body can convert alpha-linolenic acid into EPA and DHA, but the conversion rate is poor. Consuming alpha-linolenic acid is a poor alternative to consuming EPA and DHA, so stick to fish oils that have a large percentage of EPA and DHA.
Fish oil did stuff to me.  It made me less stimulated.  It didn't make me feel any better, but there were definitely results.  Maybe it'd help with younger people not so used to the condition yet?

It was sundown brand from CVS.  360 mg EPA/240 mg DHA.

Cool chemical names though:
Eicosapentaenoic and Docosahexaenoic acid

Btw Jay, I'm from arlington, around the intersection of george mason/washington blvd.  I am there sometimes.
I eat salmon twice a week, usually.  I feel calmer and have healthier skin when I eat fish on a regular basis.

When taking fish oil capsules, one must be careful not to overdo it.  Cod liver oil has a high amount of Vitamin A and can easily cause a harmful overdose.  Also, too much fish oil can weaken blood vessels.  I once took too many fish oil capsules and got red spots on my upper arms from bleeding capillaries, which was kind of a scary thing.
I do that too Gareth, find something I think works but then I forget to do it.  Is this a defining aspie trait?
Special needs pupils to get fish oil supplements

Fish oil supplements are to be tested on a group of special-school children with learning and behavioural difficulties.
Researchers want to know if the brain-boosting omega-3 supplements can improve such disorders.

Omega-3 is an oil rich in EPA, a fatty acid that helps the brain to send messages between cells. Studies have shown that it can improve memory, mood, concentration and behaviour. The 38 pupils taking part in the trial, which begins today, all attend Eaton Hall special school, in Norwich.

For six months they will take the supplements every day, while their behaviour is closely monitored.

The children, aged 10 to 16, have a range of problems including attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia, Asperger's syndrome and pervasive development disorder.

Some of them have already been prescribed drugs. Ritalin is used to treat ADD and ADHD but can lead to decreased appetite and insomnia.

There is some evidence that omega-3 can reduce these side effects when taken together with ritalin. That relationship will also be examined.

Lianne Quantrill, project coordinator at the school, said: "There is already mounting evidence to suggest there are benefits to taking omega-3 fish oils, particularly for those with behavioural problems who may already have fatty acid deficiencies.

"This trial will be a chance to look in detail at the effect on a particular group of children with special needs.

"The results from the trial could well go on to affect national attitudes towards the link between dietary supplements of this kind and behaviour."

The findings will be analysed by Dr Madeline Portwood, a senior educational psychologist working for Durham county council.

Staff already monitor the behaviour of pupils, building up a daily record of their progress and behaviour. By comparing previous information with that gathered during the trial, the impact of the supplements will be gauged.

Parents have granted permission for their children to take part in the trial and can withdraw them at any time.

One mother, Debbie Weymouth, said: "There is so much that I have read about the positive effects of omega-3 oils, it will be interesting to see for myself if there is an effect on my son."

Fish oil also contains vitamin D, which maintains strong bones and is thought to protect against cancer.

A study published in the Lancet medical journal last week showed that pregnant women who lacked vitamin D might give birth to children with an increased risk of osteoporosis.

Researchers who scanned 200 nine-year-old children found that the mothers of those with low bone mass were deficient in vitamin D while pregnant.

Pregnant women who took vitamin D supplements and were exposed to higher levels of sunlight had healthier children. Sunlight helps the body to manufacture its own vitamin D.

Professor Cyrus Cooper, from the University of Southampton, who leads the Medical Research Council team that conducted the study, said: "These findings provide unique evidence that a mother's vitamin D status during pregnancy has a long-lasting effect on her child's bone development."

I noticed that someone had started a new fish oil thread, and had referred to the Education Guardian piece. I supposed that they hadn't looked at what was already posted here.
Fishy, I take one of the Tesco High Strength Cod Liver Oil capsules (1000mg) and one Evening Primrose Oil capsule with my bedtime drink, in the hope that they might help to repair and renovate my brain while I am asleep.
yes, Fishy, I too hope to keep going those few grey cells that are left, and if these fatty acids help even a little it will not have been at too great a financial cost.
So no definite answers regarding whether fish oil or any oil is helpful

i got told to take it over the years for pms, skin, mood, concentration difficulties, brain food, circulation, recovery from trauma, and arthritis.

i took evening primrose when i was in high school for pms but i didnt notice anything. i took omega 3s a couple years ago for concentration and mood but i felt odd.

the oddness felt slippery in my head. i found out they are not recommended for epileptic people. but i am not dx epileptic.  i dis have an eeg that was *normal* but with many theta waves.  i have been thinking lately no one knows much about oil and what ever i read is mainly a big money spinner because the main consumers of fishoils are rich parents buying them for their perfect kids.

my aunt in UK gets fish oil for my 12 year old cousin who is AS. she says he is more manageeable. She takes oil too and said it would help my moods.

What do i do? i know the ratio of EPA to DHA is 18:12. then i read somwhere else it is different.  What do i really want? I do not want to be more manageable. i do want my brain to work the best it can.
Any one else got ideas?

Fish oil in the recommended dosage won't do you  any harm, and might do you some good, so the balance is in favour of taking it.
thankyou Mish.
I had never really understood about apraxia before because i thought i could speak so i did not have the problem. But i looked it up again on Wikipedia and learned about how it applies to all types of movement, yet it often happens inconsistently, which is why i have always been able to look ok to anyone who is looking at me. i try very hard to hold it all together so then i get tired and go home and do not talk and walk funny.

Wow! this is big problem for me. It explains why I avoid people. Why i do not do housework much because i get trippy and why i have my own language which is different. It is the inconsistency which has made it difficult to pinpoint and explain to others. Now i am an adult i donot move around as much as i did when i was a child so i get more often cut off.

Also it explains why if i do not have exercise every day i get very confused about everything and cannot talk at all. I am hoping to try fish oil again one day but at the moment i am strying to stop dairy products because i think they might be affecting how i absorb nutrients.

Even if this works i will still *be an aspie too*, because i am sure i will be able to be even more  neurologically diverse.
