I'm so glad I found this site. I go through exactly the same experiences as most of you out there, Evan is 9 years old with Aspie, he goes off the handle at the drop of a hat, has a complete meltdown if more than one thing goes wrong in his day. I had tried every thing taking away his TV, playstation legos, knex all toys for up to a month. I've tried reasoning, smacking, time outs, quiet rooms every thing I can possibly think of.
It didn't just happen at home but happened at school as well. The head finally asked me to "Arrange to remove your child from my school". He had only had one 1/2 day fixed penalty exclusion EVER, and that was for hitting back. I home educate Evan now but his little sister, aged 7 attends the local mainstrem school (Different school). I have had to give up work and university so that I can spend the time with him that I have to. All my spare cash is spent on keeping him occupied and the Local Education Authority won't help because I CHOSE to take him out of school. When a 9 year old attmpts to commit suicide becuase he is so unhappy with school, I think its time to remove him.
Anyway, Just like to say thanks to all of you because I now know I'm not alone.
 Hi welcome to the site, i have been a member since december of last year and i have a 4.5 yr old child with ASD and severe communication difficulties and learning difficulties. I know how you feel as when i found this site i was at my lowest ebb and i found some really nice people who will listen. there is a chat room and i am around most evenings and you can have a joke and air your worrys there. please post when things get you down, and also if you get chance come to the chat room too, look forward to chatting with you and take care julieanne
cleankittycat, do you have any help via benefits, family fund or social services?
Home schooling is a lot of hard work, and too many kids with ASD's get excluded. Can you ask about other schools in the area where he could get better treatment?
Since Evan was 3 he has attended Special school (nursery), Catchment area school (reception and part of year 1) rest of year 1 I home schooled, school he has just left for year 2 and part of year 3 (had to move him becasue we couldn't get his sister in there, he then went to her school for rest of year 3 and 6 weeks of year 4. Home schooled until christmas when he went to local church school for 6 days home school again until easter of year 4 then he returned to last school, now year 5 had to remove him again. I think I have given my local education schools a good try. I even got told by the Specuial needs team of LEA last year "This had better be his last move before high school." I told them "I hope so, I am not planning on moving him again", I have never PLANNED on moving him at all.
I have had to give up work, just got a letter telling met hat I have been accepted on the Masters degree course for Local University. I'm going to have to tell them I can't go because I wont be able to afford it now fianncially or emotionally for Evan. I won't have the time to devote to it or him. The choice is made and Evan will always come first.
I get DLA for Evan and his dad (who is also disabled), help from the Family fund every year, (days out grant usually) But I have never recieved any help from social services. Parent partnership is useless, so is local LEA, SPed team etc...
You may be able to get respite help or specific funding to pay for services from Social Services. It is worth asking for an assessment of his needs and what they could do for you.
Don't turn down the degree option straight away, have a think about it, you may get a grant as you aren't working, and they may be flexible about hours of attendance.
Look at all your options first.
Amy
I have accepted the place at Sheffield University, don't know where the moneys going to come from right now. Am not accepted for funding for my degree as my balchelors wasn't a 2:1.
Was hoping that my book would be finished but with Evan being at home no chance of that any time soon. Have applied for interview re respite. Won't hold out much hope though, Doncaster council is Crap (can I say that on her) if not sorry
anyone interested in a kids book about a group of 4 inept wizard kids who discover the world of Midgard and help end the age of Ragnork?? It's calle "Rotten Roger and the Biforst Bridge" when it does finally get finished, am self publishing Graham Taylor (shadowmancer) has given me a lot of help in this direction
Can they do a student loan that you wont have to pay back until your income reaches a certain level? This is the kind of thing that the Government has promised.
Do they have a department at the University to get financial advice from regarding student loans?
I've got bad credit so I can't get a loan, because they do a credit check and I fail. Good idea though.
Aren't student loans independent of that? They are part of the Government scheme and are paid back when your earnings reach a certain level, so credit rating now is not important.
Try finding out more about it, not just from your bank.
