I have had problems too. I thought it was just me.

I thought it was hacked. --but bandwidth issues make sense. I guess I should limit myself and let other people on.

That's been happening to me as well. A friend that owns a forum told me that "Since it's a popular site it may be the host throttles bandwidth, as in only allows so much to be used each hour/day/week etc. That would be why some people can get through and some can't, the host is dropping requests/connections."
I thought about this and I've noticed some of the threads have an unusually high number of views, in the thousands. Perhaps they contain key word combinations that get hit through people surfing via search engines who arent' looking for an AS site but are clicking through seeking a popular topic like "Hilary Duff" or "join army".
That's a very interesting theory! Maybe it could be something like that.

I couldn't get on to the site this morning, but it is fine now.

I've had some issues connecting myself. Obviously I'm not at the moment or I wouldn't be posting this
There have been a number of issues over the last six months or so, including hacking and spam. There could be a bandwidth issue as well but I can't confirm this.
Be assured that the Administrators are doing their best to try and solve the problems.

There seems a similar problem with Wrongplanet. I keep on getting mySQL errors (whatever that means) after being in Wrongplanet for a short while. Their website is huuuuge. Would moving some of the older stuff to an archive help with the bandwidth problem?
Some threads refer to events that have happened 2-3 years ago and no more comment is necessary so surely they could be shunted off to an archived area (like what happened with the old Aspergia stuff).

Here in the US I have no problem getting on in the morning/afternoon, but during the night it all goes to hell.

The server quit on me at 2AM (GMT), tuesday today, and kept me logged in... Messing up my statistics - GRR; jk.

It seems to have gotten better, I've been able to on for the two days with no problems.

My sources say they tweaked the server the other day to see if that helped. I would assume that thus far it seems to have been successful.

The problem with the server was related to a daily scheduled task which runs at about 0200 UTC. This is now fixed, so the forums should be more stable now.
I work for an ISP, so the hosting is basically unlimited and free, although the server is my own.

We have been getting HUGE bills from the site hosts for bandwidth, so we changed over to try and avoid that, I will try and check if its a throttled bandwidth issue or something else, thanks for bearing with us.

Amy, can we donate to help with the bills?
