I don't understand this comment, it sounds ok to me.

"Why don't you use your library?" we felt could be rephrased as when said sounds appallingly bad English!

It could work, but "your" implies that you own a library. It would be more common to say "Why don't you use the library?" (it may look odd because doesn't say which library, but that's what used most often) . In what context was it in?

Thanks for the reply. I have actually just asked my proofreader and as far as he is concerned it is grammatically correct and doesn't really understand why it would be considered appallingly bad.

Actually it would be right, the public do own the libraries, well at least the ones I am doing the publicity for.

It is a generic public consultation postcard with a few questions trying to assess why people don't use their local library and asking what we can do to make the libraries more appealing

The question is a little curt.  I'd suggest rephrasing in the passive voice, possibly as a followup question.

Mind you, if you've already tried that and not gotten any useful responses, perhaps the direct approach is best.

As in, "Why isn't the library used by you?" (???)
