I tried the "reactivation" and the avatars I try to upload are from my computer and all are small and appropriate.  
Am I missing something?  help! (-:

I tried to upload an avvy a couple days ago, I got the same error message.  I don't think this is confined to a few accounts.

Gareth has said that it shouldn't be possible to upload pictures, so you have to make an URL from photobucket.

Damn! I was unsuccessfully trying to change mine, but I pressed the wrong button and I can't even get the old one back.

Hi, i have the same problem (because of that i chose the penguin:p)

i think the problem is from the server so it's useless keep trying for now, i have like 1 month (since i'm registered) trying to change my avatar, even I have tried with several codes html but nothing ressult

As couldbe says, the matter is being investigated.
I know myself, from fiddling just now that there appears to be a bug or possibly some kind of linking error for external avatars.

Please be patient and we'll investigate further.

On the matter of not being able to access the site. This is also a known issue as I have had it myself and happened to catch Gareth on #AFF. There have been problems in the past with hacking and excessive spam.

The Moderators and Administrators are doing their best, please try to be patient.

To repeat:
Avatar uploads are disabled. We have had trolls in the past do nasty things such as post quite graphic and nasty pornographic images and use the same for their avatar. Since there are tons of free image hosting sites out there (my favourite is imageshack.us) this shouldn't be an issue for anyone.
