Full Version: How About This As a "Cure"

I thought this might be an interesting topic to start. I personally am against the cure, but wanted to state this as an idea. It is all hypothetical.

A cure has been come up with for all forms of autism. It is in the form of an injection or tablet that needs to be taken everyday until the brain is "rewired".

The catch is this. No one is forced to take it. There is no law that makes it so all autistics have to be cured. No law can be set in place, and the decision is entirely up to the autistic. Seeing as how most parents would take advantage of getting it done early, a law that sets in place the child deciding at age 16 or older arises. If the child cannot speak than they can write their answer after it is said to them, if they cannot do either, than nodding of the head is sufficient. The main problem is for those that cannot do anything.

If this sounds okay as a "cure" for autism, what would be your opinions on it.
I know, but that is why the "wait until they're 16" is put in place. The pharmacist or doctor who is certified, not the parent explains it to the child.

This was not designed for AS, but more for LF-Autism. They can communicate someway right? Even a nod or shake of the head or a typed decline would be sufficient enough.
This is exactly the scenario presented in "X-Men three, the last stand".
I stated I was against a cure, but wrote this as a hypothetical situation to see what the response would be and to start discussion. Don't feel uncomfortable, its not true.
Its all choice-I think if they make a cure-it should be avalable
some, want to be NT's as they are so detached they will never have a good life...
I am unsure if I would take a cure-I wouldn't be the person I am, but I don't much care for the person I am either...
its a tough call really
Does it take away my super powers with computers?
Otherwise, sign me up.  I am sorry to say it, but if it makes me parallel with my reference group, classmates from Shepherd or Marshall or co-workers, please.  Singleness sucks.

Choice is only free in a society where autistic people are not so devalued that many would take the choice just in order to fit in for once.

Brilliant! The coercive nature of society's malevolent rejection makes free will almost impossible.

Yes, given that some things like work and sex are so emotionally important, they can be withheld as punishment from people who don't fit in, like us.

Honestly, I don't think GLBT volunteers for that any more than we volunteer for AS.  Even if they did, I wouldn't deliberately add to their suffering.

By God, I hate Nazism.  Anything could be cured by Zyklon B.
Cure at 16? People who are blind and get 'cured' when grown up have great difficulties, often they'd rather go blind again.

But if this makeover were possible, and some-one really wanted it. Because they feel born into the wrong person, yes, the choice should be there. But only if the opposite was also available. An NT person, knowing he/she was born with the wrong framing of neurons should have the choice to become autistic.

Only then I would agree.

But I think the sideeffects of neurological makeover could very well be killing the person in the proces. After that nothing is the same anymore. It is a pervasive make-over, both ways. With a huge chance of suicidal sideeffects imo.
