I am an artist in the process of creating an evening-length new genre performance/installation work titled "Waves of Mu." The work is about mirror neurons and will touch on the idea of neurodiversity as a means to improve social attitudes about neural differences. As an artist, I am interested in being provocative with my work and making a statement. In this work I want to suggest that a "cure" is not the solution - it is understanding and learning how to communicate and relate to those with differences. I have been collaborating with top mirror neuron researchers on this work (V.S. Ramachandran and Lindsay Oberman) -including one of the neurologists who helped discover it (Vittorio Gallese). This is a complex work, design to offer an experiential understanding of mirror neurons and foster a connection between the often separate communities of art, science, and the public. I am not an Aspie, but I am interested in having people with Asperger's perform in the work and be a part of it. I will have new performers at each location on the tour. The work is set to premiere at Performance Space 122 in New York City in Feb. 2008. Hopefully through this forum I can connect with the right community. I am also seeking additional funding to support the work (some grant funding has been secured thus far). Please visit my websites to learn about the work. I welcome any questions, ideas, discussions. I need support and I want this community to be directly involved.
