I'm not a Freemason…but Freemasonary does have a certain aspie-feel about it.
I'm somewhat interested in Freemasonary...it figures into my Grail quest, you see.

<smiles fiendishly>  Droog, you wouldn't want to perhaps do a bit of spying for me, would you?

Smile  Is that a yes?

Not a Mason but both my grandfathers were, apparently.

I hear you don't have to be any specific religion, but you do have to believe in a supreme being of some kind. So atheists can't join.

Caught a glimpse of meeting minutes at one point. (Because my boss was photocopying his minutes at the place where I was working.) Joked a little about "Oh well now I've seen them you'll have to kill me, eh."

They were mostly about liquor licences and other such stuff.
Pierre, one of the main characters from Tolstoy's War and Peace, becomes involved with Freemasonry and also seems to have some Aspie-ish traits. I remember being  fascinated by it when I read it.
Have you thought of becoming an Esperantist? That might fill a similar need.
One not so pleasant thing about Masonry: my grandfather was a policeman in England. He never joined the Masons, and was never promoted as a result.
It seems like there are a couple things going on here:
1. A need for more human companionship (something we Aspies need)
2. Spiritual needs
3. Insatiable curiousity, Aspie style.
Think about these needs separately, don't conflate them.
Somebody wanted me to join the Order of The Eastern Star (female version of Masons) but I would have had to phone up and somehow never got around to it.
There've been a few males in my family who were Freemasons, and at least one of my aunts is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  I'd like to join that if I were more at ease socially, but I don't suppose the spying would be quite as much fun. Smile

I'm not an atheist, at least I don't think I am. I was never raised with religion though. My parents were both protestants, but they abandoned the church right after they got married. I think they still believe in God though. I never thought much about God or anything, but I sometimes wonder how the universe was made and why everything works the way it does. I believe in an afterlife so I probably believe in a supreme being who created the universe as well Smile

I'm not sure when I will try to join them, but I'm pretty confident I will in the future. I think in the US Freemasonry is much more common than here in The Netherlands, so people around me might not understand what it is and why I want to join.
Smile  Just tell them you're Grail-hunting.

I guess you mustn't have been interested enough, then.

Funny how conspiracy theories always pique one's interest in things. My first seeds of curiosity arose from the movie, "From Hell", and then watching Monty Python's take on the Masonic movement. (Graeme Chapman with antlers on his head being hit with an animated hammer, and a voice from above saying, "Bad Mason! That's a Bad Mason!")

I'm curious now what your theories on the Holy Grail are? Is it like the theory in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code (the grail = the holy bloodline of Jesus Christ) or do you actually think it's some sort of relic? (the cup like in King Arthur and Indiana Jones)

The former.  After reading "The Da Vinci Code", I felt compelled to return to the Grail-quest of my childhood, when I had believed it had been a magical cup.  I went first to "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", and continued probing from there.  I believe it...but that means very little, really, as I tend to believe what I want to.. Fascinating stuff, though.  Way too big and complex to be a hoax, if you ask me.

Have you seen this, Athlynne?

http://www.rosslyntemplars.co.uk - It's a group of Scottish Freemasons who call themselves the Rosslyn Templars. They study the Rosslyn Chapel (a location in the Da Vinci Code) and a possible link between this chapel, the Knights Templar and Freemasonry. I think it's great to see that there are at least a few masons who take the claims about Rosslyn Chapel seriously.

I really must resist the urge to read up on the rituals performed by Freemasons. The element of surprise seems to be pretty important during initiation, according to the freemasons. I really don't want to spoil that Big Grin
Ack! edit button! link is wrong! it's:

Ooh, thank you!

Rosslyn, the Cathedral of Codes!  There are secrets in that chapel, I'm telling you...
