Is anyone else having trouble changing their avatar?  I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right, and I keep getting the "URL invalid" message.  Is it the site, or am I a cabbagehead?

<hugs>

Athie
Yes ,I cant seem to change mine either. If I post a URL theres a system message claiming the link to be invalid. If I try to upload an image theres another system message claiming I lack permission to do so.
I'm also having the same problem.... ::goes back to lurking::

Hah! did I...

Sucess for me was from an e-mail from me to an Admin, politely asking that my Avatar be changed... It took quite some time to process... I was patient...  as I was once an Admin for a networking environment too, and know all to well how “busy” Admin work can be, I can relate. In fact I didn't really want to bug them about it... They were quite “busy” dealing with “Atomic” whoever.... Some may remember that...

So, go into it suspecting that the Admins are busy, not ignoring you...  Also suspect their wish to "screen" Avatars, for obvious reasons, as some may “pop-in” offending others.

Size too, should be a requirement both in dimensions, and in bytes (space usage on sever).

Some users may not be aware of what the "size" of their Avatars can do. Large ones can cripple server storage-space, as well as distort forum viewing – which shoves text to the right-side of the screen. (Grrr...).

So.... most likely will get in trouble with the Admins for suggesting this:

Send a PM to them as I did, politely asking for the change. (I tell my kids they’ll get more “yes” out of me using “sugar and honey”, rather than a rant).

Also, make it easy for them by providing the link within your PM. Mine is hosted on “photobucket” Hah! A suggestion from another AFF member to me...

Be sure to downsize your graphic to a “jpg” or “gif” format. As an example, the size of my Avatar is around 80 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall, jpeg  in format and under 6k in bytes -- Not the one-gig’rs I assume Admins have had to deal with on occasion. I suspect the Admins WILL appreciate your efforts in this...

Now, I suspect my new Avatar might be deleted (smiling here Admins) having passed on this tip to perhaps load-up Admin PM inboxes, which they WILL not appreciate.... (Please don’t, oh gods of AFF...).

Oh, samples:

Used this one as a “tickle” in my signature to get attention (now I know my new Avatar is getting deleted)...

oh, somebody else please take-on asking for an: "Edit" button... politely ...

As in: didn't mean as unedited above: "suspect their wish" rather:"Respect their wish"...

Be patient, enduring... or do your editing before clicking the "submit error button"  Rolleyes

Sincerely...Thanks for your efforts, Admins....
I think I'll just stick with the polar bear. I have become my avatar and it has become me. grooowwwllll.
I believe that the reason that the feature of personal avatar selection has been disabled is because:

1. A member could upload an inappropriate file and it would be hard to do anything about it.

2. The image used by a member might not represent the group.

If reason #1 is why the Avatar feature was disabled it could be easily the prohibition could be easily avoided by posting your avatar in the signiture field or including a link to your avatar using http://www.your avatar.com.
OOPs. I don't know how to fix the previous post. So here it is again.
