you have a nice machine, except for the GPU.

Cooler Zalman 9700 (90*124*142mm copper heatsink, 110mm fan in middle. keeps my 1ghz oc'd CPU at ~30
Mobo GA-X38-DS5 (X38 chipset)
RAM 6GB Corsair XMS2-6400 @ 5-5-5-18
GPU ATi 3870 w/custom cooler
PSU 650w
Primary HDD: WD Raptor 150gb @ 10k RPM
Secondary HDD: Seagate 7200.11 1TB @7200
Sound Onboard DTS surround sound
Case Thermaltake Soprano
Monitor Dell 22" widescreen (E227WFP)
Mouse Razer Lachesis
Keyboard Razer Tarantula programmable keyboard
Misc; Corsair RAM cooler (3*40mm fans), 2*120mm case fans (Front, rear), 1*92mm case fan (side)

(NOTE: first picture taken shortly before I blew that PSU, and before I routed my cables properly.)

No.
wait a while yet. they'll be £10-20 soon enough, just like DVD-RW drives.

updated pictures (note the 650w PSU, as opposed to the 550 above, and the fact that the cables which would trail across the mb at the front are now clamped to the case, with the spares tucked (read:crammed) into the space between the DVD drives)

oh yeah, and it glows.

(Note the bottom left highlighted section; that's after a medium-high load, it's coming down from 39 degrees, to settle at about 32 degrees, with my fans on the lowest settings. also note that the stock cooler, at idle, has the Q6600 at ~43 degrees, whereas my cooler, at stock clocks, keeps my Q6600 at ~23 degrees. speaking of the stock cooler - )

I'm assuming you have the one on the right, right?

as I said, I'm triplebooting W7-64, VHP-64 and F10-64; this screenie was taken a few minutes after installing W7, which, predictably, wiped out GRUB....still, once I make the windows bootloader not see both Windows installs (otherwise, if I chose Windows 7 from GRUB, it'll just take me to the Windows bootloader and ask me which version to load again...), and reinstall GRUB, it'll play along just fine.
Alas, they've screwed around with paint now, adding that damnable Ribbon thing...it also saves as .png by default now.
Icons on the taskbar can be dragged around and rearranged (at last!), and they can also be "pinned" - a bit like the quicklaunch bar, but useful. there are also keyboard shortcuts to maximize, minimize etc, and the icon tray will only display what you tell it to - everything else goes to an overflow area, accessed by a little arrow tab.
UAC is fixed. it now discerns between user and program initiated actions, and you can also tell it to remember an action for a time, or indefinitely. its more like -su, as it should have been.
as you can see, it's rating my computer in the background.

it is *quick*. very quick.
during the install, it connected to the internet and got almost all my drivers, with the rest being optional under the windows updater.
my first impressions are...wow. now, I like Vista, but this is miles better.

Beta.
You can get it here
you'll need a blank DVD, and I'd recommend installing to a new partition - this is BETA software, it's not finished, but build 7000 is the first "feature complete" build.

until the autumn, if you can get a key. otherwise, 30 days (although you can take that up to 120 with the slr -rearm command...)

as you have the hardware, I was going to recommend the 64bit version....but I'm guessing you went with that.
a BIG word of warning. REALLY. make a new partition. when the Beta ends, you'll be in a world of hurt if you don't.
oh yeah, and for the love of god, run windows update before you play any music with Windows Media Player, or you can lose bits of songs. (when it downloads track info).
