We have had a promotional e-mail about a new autism magazine-

"Dear Friends and Associates,

An exciting new magazine is about to be launched! //The Autism
Perspective //(TAP) will be a national, quarterly and full-color
publication devoted to the subject of autism spectrum differences;
persons with autism and those parents and professionals that love, care
for, support and educate them. The all volunteer Advisory board is
impressive, and the magazine will present a positive, upbeat and
eclectic variety of perspectives! Actor Gary Cole, wife and daughter
with autism are featured on the cover of the Premiere Issue.

Please review the announcement below, and visit the TAP website for
subscription information at: http://www.theautismperspective.org

Please kindly forward this message on to anyone that may be interested
in learning more about what promises to be a terrific new magazine.

The Autism Perspective (TAP) - The magazine will deal with a variety of
issues from the “here and now” of everyday life. The first issue will
cover one family's marriage issues. Dr. Greenspan wrote an article from
his perspective on proper assessment. How we should learn to listen to
each other from a psychologist’s perspective. State Senator Speier’s
perspective about autism in California. Parents rights explained by
California attorney advocate Valarie Vanaman. Bill Stillman writes about
how he is experiencing this world. This is only a sampling of the
content. TAP will have a variety of articles covering many of today’s
triumphs, struggles, and hope. The magazine promises to be about options and different perspectives without taking sides. This will be a forum for discussion for everyone in the autism community. I encourage anyone that is interested in talking about their perspective and experience
living in the autism community to contact me.

TAP is where voices can be heard and stories can be shared…"

As we live in the UK, I dont think we will be able to get it, but they may have parts of it online, will be interesting to see if everyone gets a voice.
Jerry

Explain me this. Why is everyone more qualified to speak on autism than autistics.???? DO white people start Black oriented magazines? DO straight people run magazines for  LGBT community??

WHY WHY is everyone who is NOT autistic claiming to represent the autistic community????
interesting linguistic thing i've noticed:

non-autistic professionals and parents refer to themselves as the autism community, we use the term autistic community.
subtle difference, kinda like if parents of LGBT people called themselves "the homosexual community" instead of the gay community.

am i making sense?
I went to check it out. Out of 30 volunteers Jerry is the only one who is actually autistic (and as he says, they haven't asked him for any advice yet). In their mission statement it says:

Quote:
TAP will help unite a community of families, friends, providers and professionals living with, understanding, and fighting to cure autism.  TAP will remember it's not about one therapy or treatment style that is better than the other.

TAP will be a resource where voices will be heard, where stories can be shared.

So, apparently, as usual, it's all about finding a cure, and managing life with autistic people. It's all about the people around us, it is not about us at all.

I sent them an e-mail, here is what I said, and I hope they'll answer me.

Hello,

I am a 51-year-old female with Asperger Syndrome (diagnosed one month ago, after struggling all my life with people trying to change me to be like them). I just found out about your new magazine, and decided to check it out.

What I find puzzling is this: Why is only ONE out of 30 people on your board of advisors autistic himself? If this is a magazine that is supposed to help autistic people manage better, wouldn’t it make sense to actually let them really have a say about it’s content? Your  so called ‘autism community’ appears to consist of parents of autistic people and professionals who are supposed to identify and ‘treat’ them.

Personally, I don’t need treatment. What I do need is acceptance, and some help with certain tasks (like managing money, keeping my house tidy, keeping my car in running condition).

I am interested in your magazine, but don’t want to subscribe without being able to have a look inside of it, because I might not like it, and would be stuck with a subscription I’d resent. It wouldn’t be the first time that happened, as I am too gullible for my own good.

Oh, and by the way, are your ‘personal stories’ are all stories by non-autistic people, talking about their lives with autistic people, or will autistic people actually get a chance to tell their side of the story?

Could you please give me some more information?

Good for you, Uschi!  Let us know if you get a reply.
Surprisingly, they've replied already! Here is the reply:

Hello Ursala,

Thanks for “tapping in!”

The magazine will cover a variety of issues from both parents, providers, caregivers and yes, people on the spectrum.  I welcome submissions from people that have autism.  This magazine is about the autism experience…and that covers all experiences.

I am a brand new non profit organization trying to do a good thing…hopefully you will not only enjoy the magazine, but will want to submit an article sometime.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts…

Warm Regards,

Nicki Fischer

Damn straight.  Gay.  Whatever.  You're right.  I think parents of gays could only be considered 'close friends' or 'satellites' of the gay community.  No matter how much an NT studies Autism or Aspergers, they will never know what it is to have it, just as any straight can never know what it's like to be gay.

Did parents call themselves the autism community as a reaction against those with autism doing that? I never heard parents calling themselves that in real life in  the UK, only online and then much more so those in the US.
Excellent idea Jerry, I wrote to the editor to in the same way as Uschi and got a very similar letter in response.
I hope that they are genuine.

\"fighting to cure autism\"

Jerry

I am wondering if she said anything about my letter???
Jerry

Dont leave!!!

Stella while she is forceful on that. She is a fairly good thinker and contributor.

I  think there is a solution here. I value both your and stella's input.

I think while we need to be careful questioning the motives of our peers.

I think that the aspies that get on these boards like jerry are doing good work. He should not quit the board unless he is sure that all other aspies would do the same. and this particular board seems to have some real input.

The board membership I have questions about is grandin's membership in the board at NAAR.

Can we work this out?
We really dont want you to leave Jerry, I didnt automatically respond to your post in the complaints section as it was posted under Guest so I couldnt be sure if it was actually from you.
Saw that coming a mile off.
Yes its not new at all, if you see the date of the original post in this thread its a year or so old.

I have never seen the magazine so cannot fairly comment either way.
