I am watching this one closely and will appreciate feedback. I am on the advisory board of it and as usual, have not been asked to give any advice. Typical. Oh and i know, Loovas is on the advisory board too but so are a lot of good people so you may can that observation
However, Gary Cole, who played a sports announcer in "DodgeBall", is also in "mozart and the whale." But he was not in Spokane when I was on location.

Maybe somebody should submit an article and send it to me as well so I know what is being proposed.
Jerry Newport
Hmmmm... didn't notice that!! Thanks, Stella.
Now, on an insult scale, how does that measure in comparison to Loovas being on the advisory board?
The editor tells me that she already has accepted four articles from our peers for future use. The magazine has a section on "self advocacy" which I want to change to "living with ASD." She says submissions should be no more than a thousand words. Also, a one-two sentence and a photo is appreciated.

As the magasine is committed to "fighting to cure autism" I would expect Dr Lovaas to be on its advisory board.
It will be an important source of new customers for him, and prop up his failing reputation.
Stella
I doubt that. For one thing, he is seventy seven and we probably won't have to wait too much longer before he gets his butt kicked, post-mortem, as happened to Bettleheim. I would be a lot more impressed if it happened while he is still alive.
Jerry
It's hard to imagine that the
Lovaas Institute for Early Intervention, which claims to provide goods and services throughout the USA, wouldn't benefit from Ivor Lovaas's self-advertisement through his involvement with this magasine.
The Lovaas Institute is located at:
http://www.lovaas.com/
Stella
Probably true. However, you preach to the choir here. I personally know some of his early shock victims and what disgusts me is the collective cowardice of their parents who chose to save their own public image rather than sue Loovas.
The professionals are chicken too. Like the mafia, they have an "Omerta", a code of silence that allows each of them to rip off parents and abuse us in the name of "therapy." There are tons of people who know what Loovas did. They just won't talk until he is dead.
Loovas, like Matthew Israel, has a rep for malicious litigation. He would sue Michelle Dawson but she isn't high profile enough to bother.
Too bad she doesn't have more public company in comdeming Loovas.

I asked the editor if the magazine has an official position on genetic counseling and she said it doesn't. She said she would like to see one of us write about that, pro or con.
It looks like at least one more peer, maybe two, will join the magazine's advisory board. One is hispanic and the other possible is black, which would make it a more diverse group of aspies than usual.
Jerry
T: "ASMan", about your letter.....
I don't know. I don't imagine I will see every submission that comes in from my peers. I will just try for balance in the articles that appear and more representation on the advisory board. At least I am being asked for input. Most advisory boards are just window dressing; names to help orgs raise money.
This isn't paying my bills and my priority is with stuff that does
Jerry Newport
Mr Newport says
This isn't paying my bills and my priority is with stuff that does
I don't think anyone has ever doubted that. :-(

Stella,
I deeply resent that comment. I have given a hell of a lot of free time and money to the cause of autism and asperger's, more than a troll like you can dream of.
I am really tired of having you always follow me around with a mean-spirited, backbiting comment. I also tire that nobody on the AFF list is willing to put you in your place.
Therefore, I am leaving AFF's list. But before I go, there really is no nice way to say this..
SHOVE IT.

Jerry
Dont leave!!!
Stella while she is forceful on that. She is a fairly good thinker and contributor.
Jerry: It must be when she is not hounding me, which she has consistently done since I joined this list. Thankfully, she is in an extreme minority on this list which is why I haven't left yet.
I think there is a solution here. I value both your and stella's input.
Jerry: That makes one of us.
I think while we need to be careful questioning the motives of our peers.
Jerry: I certainly agree to that.
I think that the aspies that get on these boards like jerry are doing good work. He should not quit the board unless he is sure that all other aspies would do the same. and this particular board seems to have some real input.
Jerry: In this case, there are NO other aspies or auties on the advisory board. I am trying to get a couple of good people on it. The difference between Stella and me is that I actually spend a lot of unpaid time, trying to make a difference. The only thing she contributes is a venomous attitude with nothing constructive to say, as well as unfounded personal attacks and innuendoes which I don't deserve.
The board membership I have questions about is grandin's membership in the board at NAAR.
Jerry: She is an honorary board member, I think. I certainly wish she had as much enthusiasm for human rights as she has for animal rights, particularly since Temple was born filthy rich and had lots of other breaks that the rest of her age-peers lacked. Temple spent her time on the ASA board years ago, promoting her speaking career which she doesn't even need. She sold us out when the ASA backtracked from a strong position against aversives and voted against our interests.
However, I have known her for almost thirteen years and seen some good changes so I am not giving up on her.
Can we work this out?
It's up to Stella. An apology for her latest, unwarranted personal attack would be a nice start. Stella has no idea what I was doing for years before the autism world decided to pay attention to me. I have no website or business cards. I can't help it if I wound up with more publicity than I ever asked for.
Jerry Newport
Actions speak louder than words. My time is way too valuable to waste on insults from trolls. Please curb them or I will be gone.
Jerry Newport
This magazine sucks. It is gaudy in appearance and goes downhill from there. It touts every form of quackery imaginable.
BTW, I was kicked off the TAP advisory board months ago after I badgered the founder into appointing at least one minority to the board and complained about some other stuff.
Am I am proud of it
Jerry Newport
How'd you get on the board in the first place?
I was asked to be on it so I gave it a try. My original take was skeptical but at least I saw a bigger than usual amount of articles coming from peers. That is still true but doesn't make up for the negative aspects.
The magazine is hardly new. It has simply been sold by the original publisher to another publisher.
