I agree that that article is BAD.

Maybe he wished for respect, I think that happens among at least young aspies, the bratty ones that you see an example of in one of those telly documantaries about institusionalized autistics.

All they said, was "he suffered from a sociopathic personality disorder related to autism"

Wow so the Daily Gossip have just discovered a hitherto unknown personality disorder? Wow.... Rolleyes

Related....how?

Since when is antisocial personality disorder related to autism, may I ask? It isnt even on the same axis of the DSM!

They weren't specifically referring to antisocial PD. They said "he suffered from a sociopathic personality disorder related to autism"

There are some similar diagnoses that are used in research (pathological demand avoidance can include violence and very deviant behaviour, the NAS says it is something that can occur in many people on the autistic spectrum and *not* a separate disorder, however it does seem to sum up a certain set of traits quite well, in the same way as Asperger's descriptions summed up a different set of traits) which *are* indeed related to autism to some degree but there is as of yet no such diagnostic category.

Things like oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder (esp. the latter is seen as a precursor to antisocial PD) are *relatively* common comorbids among people with ASDs as well as among people with ADHD (more common there), but they are still not directly related *to* autism.

The Daily Mail is a load of hateful rubbish that's not worth paying any attention to. They're the champions of scaremongering and scapegoating and generally being ignorant upper-middle class twats. One of these days they may get carried away with the snuff and really go for it with a headline like; Gay Muslim Autistic Teenage Asylum Seekers Sell Heroin To Children Containing New Type Of AIDS That Lowers House Prices.

They're a pathetic joke.

LOL... well it would be LOL if it wasn't so bloody true... (as in the way they write articles)

ROFLMAO, that is a fucking ace quote, I suggest we all group together, and send the daily bollocks a load of nasty letters, come on guys Big Grin I've done my part.

How do the Daily Mail manage to be outraged about EVERYTHING? They even manage to get outraged about stuff that it shouldn't be possible to get outraged about! I remember a while back they did an article about self-harm, which depicted depressed teenagers who cut themselves as evil and dangerous satan worshippers. Don't give them counselling, lock them up for the good of the nation!

And they did that infamous article about emo last summer, which looked like it had been researched for literally 3 minutes, if that.

They're a bit like the "Hating Autism" blog in that I sometimes wonder whether they're an elaborate satire or serious, but I think they're serious, which is terribly sad, really.

I do keep replying in protests as an outraged autistic person but in many ways feel like a lone voice often. I reckon if the media was inundated by heaps of angry or concerned voices each time they dared put forth an ignorant hate-mongering or scare-mongering point of view tey ay get the idea it is not worth it.
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the general public (I realise this is a quote and if I could only remember who said it, would acknowledge them).

Responding with spite and "nasty letters" only serves to confirm the views articles like this one are spreading Sad

My letter (both of them) to the daily bollocks weren't spiteful, just pointing out that the autie community as a whole, tend to get pissed off when journos write sensationalist crap (and the last article I wrote to them about, was downright incendiary), and why it only serves to cause isolation and strife between both us, and NT.

That's good then but calling people to write "nasty letters" is not the same as the well-argued points you made just now.

I was in a bad mood at the time I had written that, reading an article like the one they printed whilst on a filthy sniff hangover, does not a happy autie make Tongue

Understood - no wonder that article could leave anyone in a filthy mood Wink

Hooray for Russell T Davies though - he voted ITV News worst programme for their sensationalist reporting of this incident Smile

Lestat Wrote:
incidentally, who is Russel T Davies? I haven't heard of him.

He writes Doctor Who, among other things.
