The NAS has a good info sheet on this http://www.nas.org.uk
Here's a direct link to their "getting a diagnosis" section: http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.j...31&a=10404
Another link on "Why get a diagnosis as an adult": http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.j...245&a=8018

If you email their helpline they can send you a list of contacts in your area including NHS and private specialists who can diagnose adults.
Thanks a lot for those links. I think I'll just try and be more forthright and ask for a referal as a bottom line. I have a feeling this could be quite expensive though.

This site may be helpful, they appear to be testing adults free at the moment. http://www.autismresearchcentre.com/clinical/class.asp

The link to the main site is posted elsewhere on this site, I believe it's in the diagnosis forum.

Good luck Smile

You need a parent or other relative who was old enough when you were little to come with you though.

Yeah, plus it's in Cambridge, which is a bit of a mish from Leeds. We'll see what happens when I go back to the GP. It's not really that urgent, I mean at least my counsellor believes me and listens, but I'd really like to know for sure because it explains so much. I KNOW that this isnt just depression or Bipolar or Borderline, because even when I'm happy I'm still weird, I'm always weird and it's not like most people's weird.
The saga continues.

I work in Wakefield! Smile

There's always Digby Tantam in Sheffield (not free though)...

PS: You're very lucky to have found someone who at least listens though Smile
Tantam's site: http://www.dilemmas.org/asperger.htm

It's rather messy and chaotic though...

There is also a psychologist in Bradford who diagnoses, it sounds very thorough but at £600 is twice as expensive as most others... Plus I don't know if he still does private assessments - he's pretty good though and many years ago he used to work under the lady who diagnosed me, she seemed very positive about him (she's retired now though).

I have a list from the NAS for diagnosticians, the one I mentioned above in Bradford is Sanjeevani Associates, if you PM me your email address I can forward the two lists to you (one with Tantam's 2 services and one with Sanjeevani and another for Leeds Bradford).

I've been thinking that I actually cant afford to get diagnosed. I'm on Jobseeker's at the moment, which expires pretty soon, and I dont think I'm likely to get a job anytime soon. (Lack of eye contact in interviews doesnt really endear me to anyone, plus my qualifications arent great.) So I'm pretty much without any income at all.
Hmmf.

Ask your local citizens advice bureau if there is funding locally for testing for people on jobseeker's allowance etc. Plus there is always Cambridge if you really can't aford it - OK train ticket needs paying but that's better than £300-£600.

Get a new GP! If you don't want to ask in person (sometimes it's easy for a GP to talk you out of what you meant to see them for, or just get you distracted) you could always write a letter to him that's what I do with mine.
Sorry I meant if you don't want to ask for the referral in person!

I have also found it helpful to take someone with me to the GP - depends if you have someone to go with, though.

Xanderbeanz, sorry you felt bad enough to resort to this - I am glad you are OK now. And you are not a moron Smile
