Full Version: Too many simultaneous soundtracks on tv shows

I've noticed a trend where television shows are running a sound track of songs being sung while the dialog of the actors are going on at the same time.  I don't mean just back ground instruments. These are songs with voices singing words while the characters are proceeding with their normal dialog in various situations through the show.  This is soooo annoying. It makes it hard to pick out the right words and focus on the plot.  Obviously someone thought this was a great idea.  Guess this post was just a rant.
That really bugs me too! Its EVERYWHERE... singing music usually distracts me rather ridiculously anyway. I always bug people when I ride in cars and they want to talk- the music must be off- or I spend the whole time trying to decipher what they're saying.

I'm glad you're speaking out against background music. Wink
I don't have trouble following dialogue when there is music in the background (provided the music is not overly loud) but I think this soundtrack gimmick has been overdone.  I wonder why the producers/directors don't have enough faith in the scripts and cast to let them tell the stories.  Think of the salaries some of these TV actors get...if background music is all that's needed to create a mood, I could be on TV, for a fraction of what the current stars make, and a few well-chosen songs would cover nicely for my complete lack of acting talent! Tongue
I think the use the background songs and music to set a mood; but like canned laughter, I agree it can be distracting. The canned laughter annoys me a lot more than the musical tracks as it is loud and random.
