I'd only agree with more P.E. if it didn't mean forcing kids to play team sports. Personally, I think it would be better to have calisthenics for 15 minutes or so before first lesson at school.

This "obesity epidemic" is sensationalist journalism at its worst! I'd fully agree that there is quite a problem with people being overweight and obese, but what they do is lump in the figures for people who are just a little bit "big" all the way up to those who are "morbidly obese".

Adults also need to lead by example and encourage healthy eating.

And sensible exercise.

I guess I'm lucky that I'ven't experienced gym lessons that way here in Norway. Maybe there's competing, but if I'm a loser in one of the games I will be among alot of other losers aswell, lol!

Picking teams the "american way" is something we only do when a teacher can't do so.
Personally, I would have preferred hiking and bushwalking to team sports. Table tennis would have been okay with me but I didn't like outdoor team sports where I was clumsy and didn't generally play well.

If people want to raise their kids to be fat slobs who die at 40, then they'll do so, and the only thing that government interference will do will be to annoy everybody and steal even more money from honest people in the guise of "taxes" to give over to dishonest people (government officials) in the guise of "programs".  This nanny government crap is a sign of encroaching epidemic stupidity--that is, anyone who thinks it's a good idea obviously suffers from the stupidity epidemic.

DogBrain, I don't think many people WANT to raise their kids to be "fat slobs" - it just kind of happens.

Still, it doesn't hurt to get the kids to do some physical activity at school providing they are not forced to go out in the sun if it's hot or do competitive sports.
Maybe he's the man with the plan and the tan van. Wink
GuessWho, I think the school day is long enough but agree that there should be some more physical activity for the kids during the day (but not compulsory PE). One of my teachers used to get the students picking up papers and rubbish in the school grounds to run off a bit of energy.

i think just make the fat kids take PE, because i dont think i should have to waste more class periods taking gym class.

Wow nice. So should we make the Black and Mexican kids take extra classes, to learn to speak proper English. Oh sorry that's raaaaccciiiissssttt. Certianly it's not the same discrimination towards fat people, cause they can change. You can be selfish, that doesn't mean you also have to be cruel.

If you live in american, learn english. If i go to any other country they aren't going to speak english for me. I think anyone who can't speak proper english should take speech classes, no matter what race. (personally for me, race is a non factor). I had to take speech class in elementary school. Now my speech is fine. So should everyone else that can't speak well, especially illegal immigrants! It bugs the hell out of me that they can come in, illegally, and then we have to change all of our labels to spanish to accommodate them.

Gym class is a pure waste of time for me. I get plenty of physical activity nearly everyday. Why should I be required to take gym? I would rather have that class period be put to good use by taking other required courses. If gym MUST be required, I think it should only be required for people who NEED it.

Right, so thin people don't need to exercise right? Cause they're "invincible". Hey as long as you LOOK healthy, you don't have to be healthy right? Eat all the junk you want, be as lazy as you want. If your thin, nobody will question you right? Thin people die too.

everyone dies eventually.

That was my point. You act as if being thin somehow gives you a pass on having to work towards being healthy. That just isn't so.

I have heard that if someone is thin but eats junk food or doesn't much exercise, then they are more at risk of disease than someone who's overweight but who exercises.

Yup, but you'd never hear that from the media. Too much money to be made in the diet industry. Did you also know, most of the health problems that are attributed to obesity, actually can be attributed to the diet yo-yo cycle. Your body will always try to find a way to stabilize itself at it's natural weight.

The idea that everyone's natural weight is supposed to be 100 something pounds, is rediculous. Yet if people admitted that dieting is the real reason for health problems, the diet industry would lose it's precious money.

I think that if a student has to use the time used for P.E. for a requirement that is far more relevant/important to their graduation, then they should.
I must be an anomaly because when I excercise strenuously, I feel sick to the stomach and never get any endorphin rush. Walking is pleasant but forget anything more than that.
Yes, I was in cross-country for two years; it was two years of pain.
