In the UK Valentine's day has the highest rate of suicides and attempts than any other day, even higher than xmas.

How do you view Valentine's day?  (February 14th)
I was under the impression it was a Pagan thing. Something to do with protecting the sheep from the wolves.

Poor hunrgy wolves Sad
Cant protect the sheep from me !!

The nearest Pagan event is Imbolc which is on the 2nd Feb.
Valentine's day is another pathetic excuse to sell cards and flowers.  I guess it keeps the retailers going though.  Why do you need a 'day' to show someone you love them?  Is Valentine's day just a mechanism for the unloving to create the false impression that they do care about their partner?  I'd rather love someone all the time, rather than just on one day, so I don't see any point in it, apart from the reason that Christmas and Easter still exist, money.
it depends - if i'm with someone, it's a great excuse for soppy romanticism (which i'm all in favour of).  if i'm not, it's a great excuse to feel completley depressed (like i need one).

don't know what it's going to be this year, yet, although i do know i have a meeting about my thesis on that day, which could be fab or horrifying.

Maybe I just hate valentines day because I'm bitter about not having a boyfriend!  Still, I think abscence of lust is lucidity (is that just bitterness too?  I like to think not)

Valentine's Day just reminds of how terrible I am at romantic relationships. :/
Garnet and I like to make fun of "commercial" holidaze.  We'll exchange something with a humorous twisted angle.  We're not exactly the sappy romantic googly eyed pair.  I will buy her flowers, as long as they're not roses.....But, then again, I buy her flowers for just about any occasion, bad day, b-day, if I feel she needs a picker upper, I'll buy them.

I voted #2

Peace
In the past Valentines day has been either very depressing or bitter sweet, but I am very lucky this year to have someone special, and I do really appreciate it.
Wow monastic, are you in America?  I had no idea Valentines day was so BIG (apart from what I learn from The Simpsons)  I've never recieved a Valentines day card, and I've never sent one.

There's plenty of people I love, but they'd gleefully murder me if I ever tried to express it.  Understandable, really...
Why is it understandable?

Wow - do you reckon you could "be with someone" in less than a month from now? Is that how long - or short rather - it takes?

I know of one NT couple who do not celebrate Valentine's Day on point of principle because the very institution of a day that celebrates the pleasure of romantic love is insensitive to those who have nothing to celebrate.

good god, no.  at the time i posted the above, i had started seeing someone (sort of).  but he's just decided that he wants to be "just friends" (story of my *&^^%$£"@ life), so i imagine i'll be miserable on feb the 14th as usual.

I was thinking of having some sort of occasion for valentines day on the chat network. Something to lighten the mood for anyone whos down, costume nicknames, spin the bottle, lots of free irc chocolates Tongue
Anyone interested?
"I can see it now the aspie child asking their mother "Mom, can I grow up to: Hide in my room all day and never go anywhere; Find foods to eat that they stop making and then mope about it for years while I try to find a replacement or the recipe; screw up so often in trying to find loveinterest that I totally loose all abilty to even try because I can't work out what I am doing right and wrong in the attempts; Bounce around to dozens of jobs, majors, spend years in college, and have periods from weeks to several years of no employment prospects and therefore cannot support myself even if I ate one ounce of food a day or were the only available employee for 100 different openings; Oh whoopie I can't to enjoy the emptiness and unfulfillment of life and I could watch my whole family die and not shead a tear but lose it if my dog gets hurt or someone destroyed an item I had since I was five, and just think to top it all off I can do that and get lost in thoughts for minutes to hours and at any time not even sense time even when watching the clock. Wow, so much to look forward too. Good plan eh, Mom."

Replace the above "dog" with "cat" and you have summed it up for me. :?
