Coming in an hour late everyday is extremely excessive, and would be considered grounds for dismissal at most places of employment. However - he remains employed - which tells me whatever value they're getting out of him is worth more than the hour he's missing everyday. If it wasn't he would be fired, no? So despite overlooking it on the day-to-day (the occasional chewing out aside - bosses have to let off steam some way) when his yearly evaluation comes up they throw the lateness that they ignored all year up in his face Sad

Also - all workers are different. Many have special needs that have to be taken into consideration. Smart companies will ignore certain rule infractions if the overall value of the employee is still very high. Dumb companies tend to be very inflexible in the opposite direction.

What some of the others have said about creating a new routine is extremely valid. But he's going to have to see the value in changing. Perhaps through seeing that by achieving a raise he'll be able to buy more of the electronic gadgets that he likes so much.
