Aspies For Freedom

Full Version: David Lynch, AS or not?

I'm wondering if David Lynch is a mild Aspergian.  If he has it, it wouldn't seem to be pronounced (you know, an uninformed person wouldn't see him once, and say "autistic").  Perhaps Aspies highly attuned to the mannerisms might, but not people who don't know anything about AS.

But one thing he doesn't seem to show are signs of emotional turmoil, which usually manifests itself in some way or another.  You would think an artistic Aspie (he is an artist, first and foremost) would show signs of inner turmoil, I don't think he shows any signs of that.  I don't think his art is reflective of emotional turmoil, either.

He appears to be a very normal person, with high artistic/creative ability.  There are lots of these Quirky NTs (as we call them here) who have unusual abilities in the creative arts, and would be seen as highly eccentric.  Perhaps David Lynch is one of these.

I've seen him in interviews and he just seems like an "average guy," who happens to be a great artist.

I just don't see any of the signs in him.  Am I missing something?

Um, it almost sounds as if you have never seen eraserhead.

If you don't see any signs, why would you think he has AS?

An excellent point.

I mean, one may as well post something such as "I don't see any signs of AS in my neighbor's microwave oven. I wonder if it has AS" -- this would make no sense. Obviously Batman 55's post implies that he does see traits there.

Batman55, why not state so plainly? That would seem to be the preferred method of communicating here.

I think that Batman55 does see some signs, and wants someone to validate what he sees before he would be willing to state such?

Batman55, is it possible that you read somewhere that Lynch is supposed to have AS, but forgot to mention it in the original post?

Yes, in the Entertainment forum on AFF there's a thread about it, but no one ever visits that forum.

Also I have read elsewhere on the Net that he is a speculative case.

Can we have some more people comment on this?

Come on people, someone has to have something to contribute to this thread.

Well personally I think it's stupid to try and diagnose celebrities etc. with AS just because they may share the odd personality trait. Why don't you ask the person who originally claimed he might be AS?

Well personally, you would be wrong.

How can a personal view/experience be wrong?

If nobody ever thought a personal view or experience to be wrong, then I'm not sure if "heated arguments" as we know them, would even exist.

But a personal view or an experience is something you hold inside you that is your EXACT personal perception of something. That is how it is, nobody can tell you that experience is wrong because it is something only you know precisely how it feels.

Opinions based on those experiences however...
