Yes, I would say this is me.  And I'm ONLY autistic (no co-morid personality disorders - personality tested many times throughout the years), so that would make sense, then as to why I've been told that.

For instance, I'm not uncomfortable sociallly because I'm "anxious" at all.....it's simply because I have sensory integration disorders, and have trouble making small talk, etc., which makes it only uncomfortable.  I answered all the questions literally and completely truthfully.  And to me, being autistic has nothing to do with self-esteem or confidence, either.  My son is also autistic and he also has great self-esteem and confidence.

Anxiety wasn't tested for above.  Personality disorders was.  And I'm not considered AS, I'm HFA.  And you can "learn" just about anything if/when you put your mind to it.
And why?  Even if you do have say OCD or something, why allow yourself to feel bad about it?  But then again, being autistic as I am, my "emotions", as Temple Grandin even explains, is sort of "separated" from the logic side of my brain.  I use logic in place of anxiety a lot, too.  At least in social situations.  Just because I'm awkward, etc., doesn't mean I have to feel less confident about myself, either.  I guess my confidence stems from knowing that I'm good at compensating for my weaknesses and even NTs have weaknesses, so why let that get you down?
So, I guess I'd say it only has to do with your self-esteem and confidence if you LET it.  But again, maybe that IS a difference between Asperger's and HFA.
The above is assuming that AS = Aspergers.  I've seen AS used to stand for two different things at times.
