Just to see what was up, I joined the Indianapolis-area "Meetup" in regard to the Spectrum.
I'm wondering if it isn't a mistake. Its dominant voice is this condescending mother who is just SOOOOOOOOOOO happy to let little animals like me (as an aside, I'm 41 and have my own children) show off and be *helpful*, but she's just as happy to lecture me on spectrum matters, as if I were some ignorant piker at the age of 14.
She lectures me on "misunderstanding" others and CONSTANTLY DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT I WRITE!
How do these "normal" parents get to be so MONUMENTALLY STUPID?
I've also experienced this, and I think I've heard that is part of the reason why some aspies prefer AFF from Wrongplanet. Our views shown at the front page kind of blocks such behavior.
Ha, ha. I had to laugh when I read this. It seems that everytime I try and get involved with a group to help my son there is always some NT loudspeaker, with very little IQ quotient and too many self help books under their belt, telling everyone else how to be.
I get rubbed up the wrong way, last 5 mins and leave.
I just moved and when I mention that my son has AS around here they say: Ahhh, you poor thing, like I'm raising a retard or something.
My husband is going to start a lan gaming group so that kids like mine can get together and link up their Xboxes and PC's and play...
Meh. Aspies can be stupid too. I think people in general can be stupid... even people with high IQs often don't have common sense.
It's more of a "People are not perfect" thing than an AS/NT issue.
Callista- yes, but the differences between aspies and NTs only exacerbates the problem.....

Well, I can tell you I wasn't too impressed last time I went to WrongPlanet. As soon as I loaded it, the page was covered in banner ads for all kinds of counselling and "special schools", and it did that geographic server thing to show me ads for places in my town. CREEPY! I'm registered there, but I've never posted there, mainly because I don't have the time. I might also mention something else I didn't like. I thought it was great when I saw a discussion of martial arts. (I think all Aspies need to be able to defend themselved both physically and psychologically.) But then, a martial arts instructor who was an Aspie himself, stated that Aspies shouldn't learn martial arts because "they might kill somebody". (As if all those other kids aren't already lethally dangerous. My old high school had lots of rednecks who carried hunting knives to school every day.) That discussion went on to something like "how about a watered-down version of martial arts first and then maybe some skills the kid could actually use. With some of the attitudes I've seen there, we're going nowhere.
As for the loudmouth self-help book addicted NT at the meeting, that reminds me of how I would consider structuring a local group if it was upon me to organize one. I would set it up with a core group consisting of adult Aspies, and then two auxilliary groups, one for youth Aspies and another for NT friends and family who are willing supporters. Halt discussion on that here, though, because I think I should give it its own thread.

Don't I know that one. I spent the past winter working as a chairlift operator at a small ski area just west of Boston MA. Every Tuesday night we'd get a bus load of kids from MIT who would come out and learn to ski. These are supposed to be the smartest people in the world, they're going to become quantum physicists, engineers, etc. But for some reason, the concept of sitting down on a chair that's hanging from a cable is just way beyond their grasp. I even had one tell me that he's been reading up on snowboarding a lot so there's absolutely no reason he should be having such a hard time at it (he was falling miserably).
they might have been scare be cuase the had done the the hypothetial stranth of said cable and chair.

Okay, I gave it its own thread. Look in the "Local Groups" forum.
"stink on ice"?
well point is, IQ does not help you in anyway, its experience that makes you intelligent.

Define "intelligent" in a consistent and universally-applicable fashion, and then your statement will be able to be evaluated.
