HFA and aspie's can tend to have skills that tend to be very usefull. Information Technology for instance - i'd bet the aspie/hfa rate there is probably 10% or higher. More so when you get into the more complex and esoteric areas of it. (checkout some of the usenet groups - like news.admin.net-abiuse email, where the anti spam mail administrators hang out - i'd say an aspie rate probably approaching 50% there)
What percentage of monks in the middle ages do you think were aspie/hfa (or even LFA!) - think about a monestary. Nice isolation, no need to speak, you are expected to be contemplative. eccentricity is almost stereotypical for them. Prayer beads/rosaries/etc - SO obviously a form of stimming. Self flagellation is even accepted at some of them!
In the east you see the same thing in monestaries. This is not just a european thing.
Heck, you even see monks ROCKING while chanting the same words over and over and stimming with beads. <G>
What percentage of "higher learning", art, literature, even engineering know how stemmed from those monestaries? Hmmm?
Point being society has ALWAYS been highly dependant on autistics without being willing to admit it. Most NT's don't have the stomach to delve into the level of detail to make complex projects function. They tend to be to generalist.
I think if they DO find a cure and fix us all, or wipe us out, they will wind up with exactly what they deserve.
