I have read these posts on another forum and wanted to share them as they are so concerning, I have edited names as I have not been able to obtain permission for one which may involve criminal proceedings-
"Hi everyone
I've been having a hard time again with my son and his so called school! During the last month my son has not had any school to attend, which having already had 26 months of nothing but 6hrs of tuition a week, is a dissapointing place for us to be.
My son came home from school on the 28th Sept and begged me to stop them hurting him. He said he would do anything i wanted if i told them to stop. He described a restraint position he'd been held in( that from a police friend is used only for drunk or agressive or violent offenders). He had also been in a room without any windows for the whole of the school day. There was no communication from the school about this other than my son had chosen to be in this room. During the evening we decieded to ask the police to talk to my son as we were sure that what my son had been subjected to was abusive.
There has followed a series of meetings between all the relevent bodies and as of today the police finally said there seems to be alot of inaccuracies given to them via the school, and they will talk to my son in order to pursue this further. It seemed at first that our son bieng AS was not considered capable of telling the truth...hahaha...!Shows the level of understanding of AS doesnt it.
It was the board of Govenors that decieded that my son should not attend school although they failed to inform the L.E.A. who assure me that he is neither suspended or excluded...I wonder what they call it then. How about victimisation?
Im no longer sure of what the best way forward for my son is. I have a meeting next week where i am supossed to be clear about what i want for him and yet i thought i always had been. There doesent seem to be a place for my son and the education system for our kids is diabolical and is almost non exsistant more so where we live.
cor dont i know just how you feel im going thro the same sort of thing but lucky my son still is in school but only just he is only allowed to go half days to which he aint going to like, the school just cant cope with him but dont seem wanting to do anything about it. the whole education thing is wrong where is the help for children this these problems and they forget these children cant help it
take care xx
Hi, my son has had situations similar to this, and the school seemed to get off scott free, if you just make a complaint to the LEA, they supposedly investigate and actually do nothing.
It does sound too harsh and abusive for him to have had that treatment, and I would pursue it with the police if possible.
This kind of thing goes on a lot, and a lot of it is dismissed as lies by children simply because they have autism.
Hello,
I just accidentally came across this site and your note posted re. putting in cupboar and methods of restraints. I thought my son was the only one having gone through this.
He attended a special school (Beacon Status!!!). He has sometimes on the ASD line, has ADHD, severe speech and language and Tourettes - all diagnosis from different people.
On the day in question, he had gone into school in a bad mood (normal mother/son disagreement), as I watched from the car, he kicked the classroom door and then took himself to the playground - a place he had been taught to go to for cooling out - they wanted him to learn to control his own behaviour/time out??!! They hadn't told him it was inaccessible today due to work. So he started to get frustrated and two 'heavies' jumped on him, and dragged him into main building. I ran to see. They said go home he'll be fine as he lost control in the hall. I watched from a window and they held him up against a wall, he started to panic and was frothing at the mouth, I ran back and demanded they let him go - which took 3 attempts!! He fell to the ground where we both cried and he kept saying Im sorry Mummy. I was angry telling him he had nothing to say sorry about. His coat and trousers had been torn in the process and he was upset and worried I would be cross - I think not!! Just like him, he wanted to stay at school, once he calmed, to 'make up'. But when I returned in the afternoon, he had spent over 30 minutes in a cupboard, no windows, a reinforced door with no handles. If there had been a fire, he would have died. It blocks the fire exit door, and with no access, he would rely on someome remebering he was there!!! Hence, he is now out of school, and we went balistic. The room, photos and measurements taken, was a mere 4ft by 3ft and this was a chill out room they had made for him, unbeknown to us!!!! Why are our children being persecuted for their special needs???
Is there any school in the UK that actually cares and nurtures? Anyone??
Hi
A very sad story. My sons classroom has a 4ft by 3ft room too. The door is never locked(then why the door???) and a teacher/aide is standing by the opening. If you didn't sign any forms allowing restraint it looks like you have excellent grounds for a lawsuit. Assault, not to mention unlawful confinement and a heavy fine for blocking the fire exit. In my opinion if you have to use this "cupboard" you have failed miserably as a teacher.
