I once saw a documentary on dutch tv about a Japanese guy who was very into robotics, he had a part-time job, spent most of his spare time and money into the development of a robot to preserve justice. (a kind of Robocop). He rented a room with a floor surface of just 10 square meters.
As far as i can tell, he seemed aspergian. People like that seem socially accepted there. They even have a name for such people there, "Otaku" if i remember correctly. It didnt even seem to have a negative feeling attached to it.

The Japanese actually really look down on otaku, as far as I've heard. But yeah, some of them definitely are Asperger's.
There's some debate as to if it's a derogitory term, too. It seems similar to 'geek' or 'nerd', as some are offended and others wear it as a badge of pride.
I think the offensiveness of the term depends on where you are, as in America or Japan.
