There's a much better set of tests here: http://www.icn.ucl.ac.uk/facetests/myabilities.php

There are several, including ones that have shoes or cars so you can tell if it is an object recognition problem or specific to faces. (Although since faces are more subtle and more complex in one go, I guess being worse at faces than cars can still be due to visual processing problems)
Female, 28 years, got 25 points
(Admittedly this is about the 5th time I have done this test, I did it twice years ago when the scoring malfunctioned and it just cleared the sheet, plus again a few times about a year ago)

My problem was that most of the time none of the options really fitted what I thought the expression represents. (If I did have an opinion just by looking at the picture - tbh without the multiple choice options most of the time I wouldn't have had a clue where to start Sad )
Has anyone else here noticed that reading comics (as opposed to watching TV or cartoons) helps in learning to interpret facial expressions? I had a phase when I was younger where I focussed on drawing eyes a lot, but I could never make them fit in faces properly, so in comics I often study the eyes in particular.

I find that when I try to emulate a facial expression, I sort of see the image I learned it from, or a mental snapshot of a person, and adopt the expression to some degree (a bit like in the show "Heroes", when Peter sees/feels the person whose skill he is using). Unfortunately I have noticed that this doesn't always work, e.g. my face doesn't always seem to obey Tongue

I think I scored so well because I am highly analytical and I've seen so many movies.  In films I can observe facial expression from afar, and notice the subject matter and how the character spoken to reacts.

Yep, I mean JUST the eyes are fairly easy if you teach yourself what to look for. e.g. are the eyebrows at an angle/raised/furrowed, are the eyes narrowed horizontally or vertically, which way are the pupils pointing (are they both going up, indicating thoughtfulness, are they both going to one side indicating fear or shyness, are they pointing sharply forward indicating focus or accusation etc.) and what the eyelids are doing.

Just a shame people in the real world don't stop and put a box over their head with a slit of the eyes, so we can take the time to study their expressions Wink

Hmm I also scored low on the systemizing test.
...
Are you poor at math, BTW?

That is an interesting point, I wonder if there might be a correlation.

Weird thing for me is I was poor in some parts of math but in IQ tests arithmetics is usually my second-strongest area after spatial. I think in school for me it mostly had to do with the way it was taught, plus with short-term memory problems.

Are you talking about the test with the eyes? Were those famous people??

Nope: http://www.icn.ucl.ac.uk/facetests/myabilities.php

My EQ was 23, my AQ was 36 (according to the test criteria, both of these scores are "correct" for Asperger's), but my SQ was in the typical range and Mind in the Eyes I scored 27, also in the typical range.

Anything to conclude from this, or is it possible that some bona-fide Aspies don't score very conclusively on the SBC tests, for whatever reason?

I disagree with SBC's theory anyway, and as I said above these tests are crap if you are a literal, inflexible thinker, or have trouble putting yourself in another's shoes. I wouldn't take them too seriously.

How about you're not as rubbish at some things as you think you are? Smile

What is EQ, SQ and AQ?

EQ = Emotional Quotient, SQ = Systemising Quotient and AQ = Autism Quotient.

Where do I test for this?

EQ=2

That's very AS like isn't it?

Yep, didn't you read the text it had when you submitted the test? (It tells you whether it is average or high etc.)

stubbsk Wrote:
Yeah I read it, thats why I said "That's very AS like isn't it?". I don't feel like I have the symptoms severe enough to be diagnosed with it but what do I actually know? I'm surprised even though I don't look it.

Yeah it's kind of hard to see in yourself, because some things you think are really strong whereas from outside your behaviour or ability in that area is "normal", whereas other things you may not even be aware of that they apply to you.

stubbsk Wrote:
What's that got to do with it?

I think he was trying to imply only someone who didn't understand the questions properly (either because they don't speak English very well or because they are stupid etc.) could score that low.

Batman55 Wrote:
And I didn't mean to imply any kind of negativity.  Just some bewildered curiousity.

Thanks for explaining - it just helps to be a bit more specific on an AS forum, comments that do not contain enough information can be quite confusing.

But I'm not sure if I did the test right, I find it hard to answer a lot of those questions because I never really thought about them.

Some of them also seem so specific, it's difficult to say how you would react in such a situation. (Same with SQ stuff, I mean I tend to look at how stuff works but when I'm on a plane I'm usually not very aware of my surroundings, as I tend to space out & daydream when I travel)
