and btw, i bet it's more messages about how autistics=demons and you should get your child chelated or murder them if nesscary.
and i bet the only ones we hear from is the parents again, telling of how their lives are ruined by this child. autism doesn't have to be desvating...ignorance is devestating.
"Autism is such a devastating disorder for so many families, and its rate of prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate," said Tom Calderone, Executive Vice President and General Manager, VH1. "VH1 Classic has dedicated itself to making an impact on autism because many of our viewers are parents who are now dealing with this issue. We've also found over the years that this disorder has touched the lives of many of the artists and musicians that we work with at VH1 Classic."
autism wasn't devestating to my family, i guess these people put all familes with autistics in peg holes and look at them as all wanting normal children and hate the children they have. and more autism isn't more evil. this sounds like an autism is evil type thing. and btw, they act like autistics are unintellegent idiots that can't think or do anything and only the people around them can help them live. i see that as very discrimatory and offenseive, and why i can't tell anyone i'm autistic. that would ruin my rep. i wish they would listen to the adults that, i don't know, are autistic. i have never looked at autism as a barrier, but instead as an upgrade to my mates. i wish there was a more netural view to autism instead of negative all the time. and how about that lead singer of the vines, i thought he was autistic as well. i think there are some others, i don't know, but i can see a bunch of musicans being autistic.
i also bet the site is full of non facts and negative talk of autistics, saying we don't deserve to exist. sigh.
I recently have been informed that VH1 is doing an autism awareness campaign, and I commend you on brining autism to your viewers. But I believe that this has been executed poorly and in fact, disrespectful to many autistics as well as their families and friends.
In the press release to introduce the program, you said that, "Autism is such a devastating disorder for so many families, and its rate of prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate. VH1 Classic has dedicated itself to making an impact on autism because many of our viewers are parents who are now dealing with this issue. We've also found over the years that this disorder has touched the lives of many of the artists and musicians that we work with at VH1 Classic."
I have a problem with this quote, as I fear you are making a blanket statement regarding autistics and their families, as well as others that interact with autistics. Many families appreciate and love their autistic children and wouldn’t give them up for the world, as seen on the Autism Hub (), a site dedicated to blogs of promoting positive awareness for autistics. To them, autism isn’t a devastation that has ruined their lives, but instead to many a blessing to have unique children. Adult autistics blog there as well; breaking down the “autistics are alive in mind only” theory that Cure Autism Now has used in it’s campaigns as well as what you infer in your press statement. In fact, CAN’s views of autistics as demons, changelings, a broken body without a soul, among other things, is very offensive to autistic adults as well as to parents of autistic children. Many autistics oppose CAN, as they have done nothing to help autistics living today, and only look to cure autism, which in definition is to become routinely aborted, as with most Down’s babies are today.
Also, there are many musicians with autism, most notably the lead singer of The Vines, so autistics are capable of more than most people think they can be.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Autistics aren’t asking for much, just acceptance into society and a realization that autism isn’t a tragedy, but instead a different way of life. I also suggest that if you would like to take action in autism awareness, to donate instead to the Autism Acceptance Project. Now I hope you are more informed of the other side of the autism issue.
Apart from that they do say we have worked with many artists and musicians whose lives have been touched by autism so I took that too include people like Craig Nicholls and Gary Numan (and they said touched not blighted or poisoned). I agree with your letter mainly but I can see why it's difficult to do something like this with a real positive slant because people might take it as...."Have you heard about these people, I wouldn't worry about'em, they're doing just fine."

i posted this for grammar check yes. what do you think of it so far?
but the way they say touched by it, it's usually cuebie speak for cursed.
They probably mean relatives, kids etc of artists rather the artists themselve - you know it's a terrible burden when you've got scores of adoring fans and tight schedules and that little brat is getting scared by all the strange people and not being a picture perfect little child for the PR team to plaster all over the headlines
Should I mail a letter instead?
It is not a nasty email. I was just thanking them for making people more aware of autism, asking for a positive message and asking them not to support CAN and why.
apparenlty, their emails aren't working. try tom.calderone@vh1staff.com and send one to him. i sent one myself telling them the negative images can uses in saying we're alive in body only (they say we were robbed of our mind and personality, and we're a tradegy), and alerted him to a few anti cure campaigns. now i just hope i don't get spam and registered to can because i sent that email.
write them an email and tell them that you, an autistic person, the main focus of this campaign, don't like it becuase you don't like the way it's excuted. i don't watch the network, but if they know you lost respect for the network because of it, they will look at your letter.
but i agree, can is terrible and lies about us. just blanket statements about us, and they assume we are mindless dolts waiting for a cure from them.
also, boycott the bands in the psa.
