The article is published in LA Weekly, but runs to seven pages, so I haven't done a cut and paste job here.
Basically, he's a brilliant mathematician and physicist who set out with a couple of friends to vandalise some Hummers and other SUVs because of their adverse impact on the environment. Things went horribly wrong when - according to his account - the friends he was accompanying improvised some molotov cocktails and caused USDmillions worth' of damage. Billy Cottrell was tried and convicted (his friends are still at large) and he is mislabelled a terrorist and is treated as such, by which I mean badly, by the US prison system.
ASman posted an initial article about this chap back in 2004, so I guess this is an update.
