Galactic Civilisations 2

This game has recieved some negative reviews, but, being a good little gamer,i decided to form my own opinion.

i bought the game on a whim, being attracted by its lower pricing and sparkly box.

first note apon getting it home:no disc protection.at all.however,if you actually buy this game, you get a second disc, with a code on it.this disc has extra media, music and cutscenes, and the code will let you actually patch it,and add new content.

this game is HARD.oh so very.very.hard.
it is played out over turns, each turn being a week.
there are three classes of weapons-Lasers,being the weakest in early stages, but smaller than the others,so you can fit more on a ship,Missles, most destructive in early stages, but large, and Mass, occupying the middle ground.

each class has specific protection, and as a rule the AI teams will pick one and stick to it,on the lower difficultys at least,so it is easy to custom tailor your ships to beat theirs.

each ship can be built from chassis up,and you can select exactly how many engines, what type, what weapons where etc etc.in the latest patch,it really does matter where you place weapons,as they now clip on your ships,so if they are all nose mounted, the ai will flank them

the AI is superb.where as many AI have to resort to cheating, the GC2 ai is actually on a level pegging as you, and,on the lower difficulties,on a lower pegging economicly and intellectually.

some of the problems, however, include a too steep learning curve,no tutorial, and,as games can take hours or even days to play out, choosing the right techology by trial and error is a painfull process.

there are several ways to win games, and conquering a planet doesnt always mean send in the troops.
my favorite tactic to to place influence spacestations within anothers systems, then upgrade them to the point where the planets rebel and join my empire out of choice.
the other victory conditions include good-ole fashion conquest, research and allience.

there are two types of station,Mining and Free, with free having three classes and mining having 5
the mining ones provide Civilisation bonuses, such as Research,Moral, and  Influence, which affect the whole empire.Freestanding ones provide more local ones, and they are:Influence, which you can use to cement a planet under your rule,or enlarge your boarders,Military, which provide a strictly local bonus to your ships,or take them from enemy ones, and Economic, which provide bonuses for local planets as well as generating actual revenue.

as i have mentioned, the AI is fantastic, and,if you have a large navy, will custom build fast transports to run past them and attack your planets.also,if you have previously played as that faction, they WILL use any designs you have created,so be careful with those stupidly powerful destroyers...

my rating
the AI gains it 10%,and the ability to custom make a fleet adds 5%.
however,it is not for those without patience to learn.

(comments please?)
forgot to mention,as you tailor your ships to beat theirs, the AI will tweak theirs to beat yours again
Space sim game?

I've played the trial of Freelancer(alot and with modding) and Starlancer's trial.
hmm...if you have played any of the total war games, its like that but harder
