I've watched a few episodes of a series called Monk. In the latest episode he had gone blind and at first he was really freaked out about this. Well, until he realized that he didn't have to bother with visual information anymore...

Thoughts.
I don't think he's supposed to have anything besides severe OCD.
Difficult to say. He does have OCD, apparently aggravated by his wife's death - although he would have had signs of it before. (Although one diagnostic criterion for AS is that there shouldn't be any other "disorder" to explain all signs, its possible that Monk is aspie and that this would pre-dispose him to OCD. But by no means definite - and not a deliberate part of his characterisation.)
I think he's got severe OCD more than anything. I've never noticed any real Aspie traits, but the next time I watch that show, I'll pay closer attention.
I've never watched the show but I think he's suposed to be obsesive compulive.
Severe OCD and an exaggerated fear of Germs
To me, Monk seems Aspie.
I agree that Monk has Aspie qualities.

I've been meaning to pose this very question myself.

He has problems associating with other people; he cannot establish and maintain relationships; he has sensory integration issues; he has had ADD episodes; notices small details that others don't.

-- Am I offending anyone here with these sweeping generalized symptoms???? --   Rolleyes

There were a few others, but I can't think of them....

I think he is only OCD.

Tim

Monk looks like severe OCD coupled with post-traumatic stress (loss of his wife) and severe anxiety/phobic tendencies beyond OCD.

However, what he really happens to be is "Funny crazy guy on TV".
In my opinion, Mr. Monk should portray an aspergian savant with OCD.

The savant portion is clear, he remembers everything. Aspergian or autistic traits can be found in his inability to make friends, his often inappropriate dealing with personal space, his blunt honesty and his tendency to sort stuff. As well as his underdevelopment of his emotional person, dislike of touching food and sensory issues among other things. OCD is pretty obvious and even mentioned explicitly.

At my first watching of a Mr. Monk episode, I also was repelled by the "Funny crazy guy on TV" aftertaste. Now, after having seen almost every eposide, I came to perceive that those characters there who should appear as 'normal' people often are set into situations where they are the funny crazy guys, and that Mr. Monk is equally shown as a person to be taken serious for his love, passion and sincerity. In some episodes, someone makes fun of Mr. Monk, and maybe it is me, but this shows more of the narrow-minded reactions of those who consider themselves being 'normal' then of Mr. Monk being the "Funny crazy guy on TV".

Ah, and I use the word 'normal' in the meaning of 'statistically normal', rather than 'functionally normal' or even 'ideally normal'. In this context, the latter is never to be used anyway.
