My guess is that it was written into the show to make fun of the "flavor of the month" quality of AS...and perhaps to say what most uninformed NTs think of Aspies and fringe-Aspies anyway just because they want someone to say it.
I liked how it showed that the autistic boy's parents loved their son - no matter what. That's what made me into a weepy girl.
I've personally met a few articulate people diagnosed with HFA or AS, so I daresay it varies.
I don't think House is Aspie though.

Yes, they're really articulate. Fluent and expressive in their speech.
